Forget the bow, give me a gun!!!

I stripped these images from a video taken at very long range last summer in northern Williamson County. The one on the right is a whopper:

The amazing thing is, those two bucks would show themselves at the same time, same place, almost every summer evening.

As the MS study on antler scores by age-class and habitat/soil quality pointed out, there was a nearly 30 inch difference in average gross score of same-age bucks from the poorest habitat to the best habitat. In fact, in the poorest region, bucks had to be 5 1/2 to equal the same scores as 3 1/2 year-old bucks in the best habitat.

In the best habitat in TN--the MS floodplain and the Nashville Basin, 4 1/2s probably average around the mid 130s. In the ridge-and-hollow hardwoods, 4 1/2s average in the low 120s. In the far eastern mountains (Smokeys), 4 1/2s probably only average in the mid 110s.

However, never forget the difference between average score and the range of scores that are possible. In any location in TN, the RANGE of scores possible for 4 1/2 year-old bucks will exceed 100 inches. This means you may see a 4 1/2 with antlers gross scoring less than 60 and another 4 1/2 scoring more than 160 on the same property.

yep BSK that one on the right is a true giant anywhere. These rich farms and land owners that dont let anyone hunt lets the bucks get to their full potential. I have a friend who gets trail pics of bucks 180 to 200+ every year in town at a customers house but she wont let him hunt just photo's.So come rut there's no telling what might show up. I've had my chances at some 160's but choked with the bow twice. I had to watch him for to long and i was just to tore up by the time he got to me and gave me a shot. I wish I could gun hunt these spots but their bow only. I'll have to figure out how to post some pics on here..

Thanks for all the info. I can see that years ago Ive set a goal that may be a little bit high for a TN buck of 140. I can see what WES is talking about high grading, I try not to shoot 2.5s or less 3.5 is a shooter to me. I am planning on setting my new goals on 4.5s as this to me is a realistic goal more so than a gross score. I brought this up because I have BEEN looking for property in the KY to meet my goal ,lease prices have turned me away. I am going to try and do the best that I can in my home state of TN. We do have some big deer public land . BSK enjoyed the picture's ,yes the 123 would be shot the other 2 are exceptional guessing 150 to 160 . I did see 4 bucks like that running together 5 years ago about an hour and half away from there, and yes it was in TN THANKS

Like stated already, 4 1/2 yr old bucks can have a broad range of antler scores across the state. While I agree that 'High Grading' is a problem and has some affect, I dont think its as detrimental as some here would lead you to believe, and heres why I think so. First off, you will always have the lets call them 'freaks', that will either be much bigger or much smaller than the average buck of their age, mother nature and its just gona happen. Now you take the rest of the bucks and while some top end 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 bucks will outscore the lesser or average bucks, studies have shown that in many cases these lesser bucks, for whatever reason, late born, mother died early, stress ridden, etc. If given the time required to reach maturity, 4 1/2, in many cases will actually catch back up and sometimes even exceed the scores of the bucks that were superior to them at an early age due to the factors listed above. This is a perfect example of why we hear the preaching that there is no such thing as a cull buck, because with enough age, even the very scrawny young bucks will many times 'grow off' and become as good as most other bucks their age.
My point is that while I think High Grading definitely is a factor, I simply dont think its the devil himself like some here do.
