I can't believe that nobody has brought up the fact that after the years of putting in to be drawn, at best 25% (2009) of the hunters will be successful. I think the average success rate before last year was about 10%. I can only imagine how bad you feel on that ride home sunday night if you've been passing up other hunting opportunities to be drawn for president island. On the other hand, just seeing the bucks may be worth it to you. To make it even worse, it only looks like half of the deer that are taken are "trophy" bucks. I had my chance last year and managed to pull of a successful hunt, but I am one of the lucky ones that was putting in before the priority system.

Just to add a couple of points:
You don't loose your preference points if you forget to put in one year but everbody that remembered will move ahead of you in line. Preference points are lost when you draw for a hunt.
The priority system is for all WMA big game quota hunts. It is not exclusive for PI. A bunch of the applicants with 1 and 2 points are putting in for other hunts on other WMA's.
There are more than 80 people that drop of the top group every year. They forget, give up, or make mistakes on their applications and get drawn on another hunt.

Dont worry, you dont feel bad on the ride home if you dont kill one. Trust me, it was one of the greatest drives home i have ever had.

I just put in and some day I'll get drawn. I hope I can go before I'm too old.

I've been deer hunting for over 35 years and although I didn't tag one down there last year, I saw more trophy bucks and had the most enjoyable hunt that I have ever had. I can't wait to go back!!! But I will!!!

I agree totally with Ahuntin1 and Footer. I was one of the unlucky one's to not harvest one last year , but lucky enough to be drawn and be there. I think the priority system is right in line IMO. My suggestion would be to add another hunt. By theory, this would lessen your wait by half. I know the trophy purist would say this would minimize the "PI" trophy effect by taking more deer. Well I'm here to tell you just cause you get drawn doesn't mean you will tag. With 6300 acres and a million possible places to hunt there, you still have to get lucky. Since the inception the average harvest being what, 7-10 deer taken. I guarantee with the 9 pt regs, and the number of deer there, this place could sustain another hunt with minimal impact on the numbers.
