Frequent urination, refusal to put her tail down due to a swollen vulva. A lot of hunters in my area will lift her tail to see if she is heat right before they field dress her.

I have witnessed alot of "doe blowing" when she was coming into heat ....in particular on the Pennington family farm in Madison Georgia when i was hunting there about 20 years ago. this went on for 20 or 30 minutes and i knew she wasnt blowing at me...sure enough she came in with a young buck on her trail right at daylight that wasnt a legal shooter....she dressed at 105 pounds......I have also heard the buck Bawl that made the hair stand up on the back of my neck and then watched a mature 8 pointer chase a doe for 250 yards down thru a hardwood draw hot on her trail! One of the most awesome things i have ever witnessed!

Tail raised and quivering and looking back. Steps foward a few
yards and does the same thing again. Have your gun up and be
ready.

Probably not. Most does won't mess with a baby buck....unless.

I have many a hot doe being trailed by a yearling buck. Years ago I named a gimpy 3pt buck "edgar". He ran ecery doe on that farm. If a doe crossed by in the words during the rut, you would edgar grunting his head off about 50 yards behind her. I go to scrape lines to find mature bucks during the rut. Every deer I have put on the wall (9) were alone.

A hot doe doesn't necessarily have to be on the run. Unlike most "hot" bucks the does will feed with some regularity and generally they'll let you know if another deer is around or has arrived on the scene. Watch where they keep watching. Other than that, a hot doe moving through the area will have either a prancing/nervous type gait or a slinking movement. Depending on the timing of the rut and in particular if it hasn't started yet but could open up any time, I glass every doe's hocks that passes through. The first dark or tainted hocks I see puts me on alert for potential bucks following particularly if they often stop to watch their backtrail. I also note where I don't see much rutting action in conjunction with those darkened hocks during the primary rut figuring those areas may hold potential a little later into the season.
