Guess the rigors of winter caught up to him... Seems if they survive hunting season, the next death gauntlet is the reduced food source period of late winter and prior to spring green-up.
Reducing late winter mortality is another benefit of achieving more natural buck:doe ratios, which results in less rut stress, which can result in an old buck being in better physical shape to survive January.
Wouldn't surprise me if that buck simply got weak in January, contracted pneumonia, and died. Since he'd shed an antler, appears to have survived hunting season. Perhaps he was wounded by a bad shot on top of everything. We'll never know.

I was kinda thinking that he may have gotten hit by a car Wes. He was only about 200 yards from the road. And 20 ft from a creek. But who knows. I do have his jaw bone and will put it on here next weekend
