I like the bow areas but they closed the best area on the base, 00B. Ive seen some bruisers on that area and killed a dandy 12 poniter many years ago. i hate that they closed it.

ya 52 or something like that. wasnt real impressed. 01 is nice but now that they hardly have any bow areas its hard to get. i love the fort and have been hunting it for years but ever since Aron took over its been going down hill. I miss chic. he actually cared about the hunters. it certainly isnt what it was even just 3 or 4 years ago. i think i hunted the fort 1 evening last year. i use to hunt it almost every weekend.

they are not hunter friendly really at all anymore and i can say that with absoloute personal experience and conviction
it is all about sales of post permits to any catagory whether you get a spot or not
they dont care...............
i too wish chic and bill still worked their they did things and went the extra mile to try and contact people in the process to free up additional hunting areas
they had contacts......
not just the bare minimum like what has been happening for the past 3-5 years
i feel sorry at times that guys with civilian call in time have even the remotest chance of getting an area
but yet they will sell those post permits like hot cakes and smile at ya when doing so.....
heck i have 0830 dav call in and lots of time cant get an area either
the system is severly gamed which has been discussed

they need to do away with party hunts other than immediate family members on the deers system i.e. military dependants and delete the option to let other hunters sign in from anothers original call
the phone pass around game needs to stop
those 2 simple fixes would have a better chance for others to get an area

i could go on and on
but i aint
aint gonna rehash stuff that i and others have brought out before that is blantently happening.

i used to hunt 00b on the last road on the eastern boundary just behind gardner hills

couldnt get a full draw on the biggest southern whitetail i have ever seen, in their one morning in the fall of 2001
swayed back
big old wide forehead
drooping belly
was at least a 12 pt or better
height width mass
he had it all
he had to be at a 5-6 yr old deer

didnt set up behind a big enough tree ( ground hunter) to cover my drawing motion and pie off the shot with small steps he came right into an interdigital hoof scent trail i layed out in the dark
if i had picked a wider oak tree to get behind about 10 yards across from me he would have been dead
he caught my motion of drawing about 16-17 yards out and we had a mexican standoff staring contest at each other for about 5-7 seconds and i said to myself i draw on him and kill him or he hauls butt one or the other and i aint goona wait for him to finnally bolt with no attempt at him

never seen that deer again

now the place is all housing and the whole area is no longer a hunting area

that colonel that owns the home down the road to west aint to happy about the whole situation either

i have a buddy who lives on britton springs road across ringold creek not 750 -1000 yards away as the crow flies and he has killed some nice bucks in a spot he has permission to hunt over the years
bow only and i cant shoot a compound anymore but would love to get an x bow someday when i can afford one and go hunting on that peice of land with him

00b was the best bowhunting spot on post
i took a 135 class 8 pt out of it in 1997
on the ridge overlooking the horse pastures .

So taking bribes and selling active duty permit numbers to civilians is ok? Now that is all hear say and I didn't know either of the 2 guys you spoke of earlier but from what I hear that is what was going.
Does the system have faults yes it does but every system does. Should we make it a drawn hunt? Or how about only active duty getting to hunt there? Or I would think maybe having about 1/2 the areas given should be for civilians only, I feel for the guys that buy the permits and never get to hunt. Now I've been there for just over 4 months, and during last spring turkey season I've seen guys have the chance to hunt but didn't like the areas, or they were too far to drive or some other excuse. Any one wanting to hunt bad enough can hunt as long as they wait and check with the automated system to see whats opening up after people check out.
I don't claim to know nothing, I would like to see some changes too but will it ever happen? I doubt it.
I don't have the power or authority to call anyone to open up areas as I'm just one of those that sell the permits and smile as I do it... I tell everyone about the automated system and how it works with the active duty call 1st and they make their own mind up to buy the permits. The sad thing is that MWR gets about 1/3 of the money from the permit sales.

BTW Aaron and Theresa are no longer there. Hopefully their replacements will be open to some changes or improvements, whoever that will be....
And yes I get to call in at 8 as an active duty dependent and sometimes I don't get in either!
Here's an idea, everyone that has changes call the interim director and voice your ideas or suggestions.Fill out one of those ICE comment cards or online on the website. They go all the way up to the upper people in charge. Can't hurt can it?

Heck a couple of weeks ago I had to beg for a dang coyote area for 2 guys that just wanted to get out and hunt something. One particular person didn't want to deal with having to set aside an area for them b/c they didn't feel like it. Now from where I see it, it's in the regs that coyote is open year round and should have areas set aside regardless if people want to hunt or not. And that person wants to do away with the open season on coyotes all together!! So some things have to change or it's going to get worse!!
Ok guys I'm off my soapbox for now. Come on by the office and we'll talk more if you want and see what changes we can come up with!

If you hunted the Ft in the 90s and before you would appreciate the system in place now.
