All the fawn and anterless deer limit topics have got me thinking. Many of the reaponses to the other threads revealed that many of the hunters kill decisions were simply based on the fact that it was a legal kill according to twra guidelines. I do believe that there are folks that strive to kill every legal deer, because twra allows it. So my question is do you see twra limits as your ultimate harvest goal and what you are suppose to try to kill ( for example- trying to harvest 3 anterless deer a day because you are allowed to in your area). Or do you them as just guidelines/recommendations to which you will stay within, but ultimately stay well below in most instances. I guess I am a free thinker, but it seems many people put incredible trust in TWRA and refuse to question their policies at all. I do believe TWRA deserve a lot of credit for their accomplishments but think like in anything, there is always room for improvement.

TWRA does a pretty good job overall imo. That being said there is much room for much needed improvement in many areas. Luckily many hunters/fisherman have common sense and put it to use pretty often. Thank goodness most dont take what is law and try to follow it to a T. Meaning just because TWRA says its ok, or not ok, doesnt mean its the best answer in every situation!

This mindset is exactly what worries me redblood. No matter what some people are simply never satisfied. A 2 buck limit is just the begining.

I will only kill what I can eat, and last year I "scaled back" some, only killing 2 or 3 deer. I ran out of venison by January, so I will try to kill 5 deer this year. If I limit out in my area, I will kill 11+ deer, far more than I can use.

I guess it is a business minset, but I feel if you not going forwards you are going backwards and you get in trouble when you rest on your laurels. But once again, twra does deserve some credit, but I also feel hunters have to make their own harvest decisions and consider factors pertaining to each individual tract of land and not just do so because TWRA says it is ok.

I've been on both sides of the "doe" thing. Thank goodness the TWRA hit it head on with Unit L.

In Alabama, where I grew up hunting with dogs in Colbert Co, the state was 10 years late giving us free reign on does. The first year they gave us more than 3 days of rifle doe hunting, we slaughtered them and still had no affect.

The last year I was in that club, we only still had 10 days (I think it was that many) and we shot 48 does on around 4000 acres and still didn't put a dent in them from what I saw after those days.

It may and probably is better down there now but may not be. The state got a lot of the place in WMA now and allow very little hunting in an area that had a population much, much higher than anywhere I've hunted in TN so I imagine it hasn't got much better.

Kudos to the TWRA for what they have done.

I think, overall, TWRA is one of, if not the, best state wildlife agency in the Southeast.

But I totally agree with this statement.
When things are going along "OK", we, whether as hunters or agency personnel,
we tend to become complacent, and situations tend to default reverse into something less desirable.

Right now, most hunters and fishermen in TN are basically "OK" with the way things are.

I sure hope our hunters don't do exactly what we allow them. If they did, we'd kill every deer within the state before the second gun season rolled around!
