I think some hunters are FAR too worried about what other hunters are killing.
As long as the deer population is in good shape, I don't care what the limits are or what others are killing, especially considering less than 50% of TN deer hunters kill even 1 deer per year.

I sure hope our hunters don't do exactly what we allow them. If they did, we'd kill every deer within the state before the second gun season rolled around!
Most don't or can't, but there are some who try. I really feel some think it is their obligation to yall.

So much emphasis on killing it gets rather tiring.

This is the perfect example of macro-management -vs- micro-management. The agency is not and should not be telling anyone what they should or shouldn't kill on their individual properties. That is an objective that needs to be set by the hunter/manager. Our goal is to equip hunters with the tools to manage their property as they see fit. This includes giving them the ability to harvest the amount of deer necessary to accomplish their goals. We do not say you should kill X amount, we simply say you may kill X amount. It is quite gratying to hear that hunters are taking advantage of the liberal limits but it is also quite gratifying to hear that they are making a consciouis effort NOT to make full use of the limits. That's what it means to manage the deer on your property.

I agree 100% with BGG. TWRA gives us the option to kill a lot of deer. I don't know anyone that takes that to the extreme of killing everything all the time. They leave it up to the hunter within limits. Could things be better? depends on who you talk to and you will get a different answer from each person. I hunt on a WMA that's bow only with the exception of the 2 week muzzle loader season. Some would say it could be better if they allowed gun season. Me I would hate it. I could even do without muzzle loader season. But if you wanted to gun hunt there are other public options within an hours drive. I like having options.

And a big "Thank you" for allowing us to do that BGG!

i really dont care what people kill on their private lands but i think alot of improvement could be done for public lands many have stated on here on alot of other threads they would whack a forky, spike or whatever had horns on public land but not on their private lands multiply that attitude with others and you might be able to see some peoples thinking about the overall quality or lack of it on public hunting areas
liberal limits are great for alot of people with access to private lands it seems liberal limits really kinda suck for the overall hunting experience on alot of public lands
jmo.....

what about public lands and the liberal limits applying on those what i let walk gets blasted down the hollow 10 minutes later which is perfectly fine and dandy for that person how do you apply any type of qdm on public land other than making limits whatever up or down so the quality of the hunt might just improve i know alot of wma,s are quality places but they mostly are on point systems or limited limits and shortened seasons
then the vast majority of public lands are game on for anything legal and those are the public lands that have alot to be desired
take cheatham wma for an example or better yet stewart state forrest or even haynes bottoms
im just gripeing aint nothing gonna change for alot of over hunted and over harvested public lands jmo
and yes twra you guys do a good job to the extent of your limits you have or limits implemented on you from others outside the agency which has to be extremely aggravating and frustrating i i just think alot of you guys have your hands bound by the twrc and alot of local good ole boy influences also on the twrc that you guys cant do anything about no matter how right and proven something might be
jmo also.....

TWRA sets the limits according to the following criteria. 1. Herd health 2. Hunter statisfaction.
They also know how to crunch the numbers to determine what LEGAL limits will get them the ACTUAL harvest numbers they desire.
Look at the actual harvest numbers and you will see that less than 50% of licensed hunters kill more than 1 deer per year.
SO... the fact that unit L hunters COULD kill 3does/day doesn't mean that MOST are.
SO... LEGAL LIMIT does NOT equal ACTUAL HARVEST.
I killed 3 deer in one day 1 time last year. After that, I got picky and only took deer that were close to the truck for a short drag or I could drive up to. Once I got my freezer full, I was trophy hunting only.

The next questions should be does TWRA have faith in it's customers? Bunch of them whine about everything, don't know what they are talking about and will complain about anything just to hear themselves talk. We are lucky they don't charge a stupid fee.
