A La Nina pattern is expected to kick in during the peak of the summer. This usually means hot and dry for the Southeast. However, a big tropical storm season is also expected which could mean some big rains if hurricanes come up from the Gulf.

With a good acorn crop, I think the average hunter sees FEWER deer while hunting, then hunts less due to his disappointment of seeing fewer deer, usually resulting in a lower deer harvest.

For this reason, I would expect the deer harvest to decrease in years of good acorn crops and increase in years of poor acorn crops,

During years with more than abundant mass the deer can quickly adapt and readily avoid areas of moderate to higher hunting pressure and still fill thier all nutritional needs...
during low mass years the average core area for most any deer, and thus the herd as whole, is going to expand and folks are gonna be seeing more of em...imo

Exactly, most hunters simply dont change their hunting styles to adapt to the changes in deer movement. This is where you hear the famous, 'My area was full of deer last year and I killed XYZ, but this year they are all gone, I dont know what happened to them'?? LOL, when they have simply changed their patterns due to a change in food source. You have to hunt them where they are, not where you want them to be! Abundant food, especially acorns, being spread out over so much area, can really limit the amount of area the deer have to cover to get what they need, nutrition wise, which is where most people miss out by hunting the wrong areas when this happens! We also normally have a good tightly timed and intense rut during good acorn years as well, but after the last few years I dont put much weight on anything that is "supposed" to happen! lol

Great post Winchester. Dead on the money.

In a bumper acorn crop year, hunting ag fields in October isn't going to pay many dividends.

Preffered acorn areas is the key. When there are alot of acorns,
deer become choosey. Humans are the same way. If you go thru a
buffet with all kinds of food, you will choose the best.

I know some areas where there are a few older white oaks where
the ground is very fertile. The deer flock to those trees first.
Just because the the woods are full of acorns, doesn't mean the
deer won't be concentrated.

one of the worse habits for some hunters to learn to ever get out of is to quit huntng last years deer...imo
and it seems to be worse when they are hunting a particular deer too....
