And, not matter what you say, shooting at running deer is NOT ethical.....IMO.

Also, I don't shoot sitting doves or running quail.......that's just not what it's about.

The Late Jack O'Connor & many others think different.

Just don't surpass your skill level with your particular weapon, and you will be A>OK...

I agree, there some situations where its not bad at all. Every person is different, with different skills.

And just how would someone PRACTICE shooting at running deer? How would someone get good at it without missing and wounding many deer while honing his shooting skills....?

just curious......

BH

You would practice by growing up shooting at running deer while hunting... One key factor you don't mention, maybe because of your lack of knowledge of deer hunting with dogs. You have a better chance of recovering or killing the animal since you have dogs trailing it. If you wound one in TN you better have a blood trail or get lucky...JMO

Great post FH and deer hunting is supposed to be fun...
Yep,it really wasnt about dog hunting, but thats where it went

That's easy for some hunting styles. For instance, I feel completely safe in saying "canned hunts" are unethical, even though I've never been involved in one.

On the other side of the coin...I have been on two (Canned Hunts) I think you are referring to High Fence Hunts?? I went 2 days in Texas before I saw a shooter buck. Again another style of hunting, and is legal and in my opinion ethical. By all means your entitle to opinion but to say unethical, try one....
Here's another one to think about in PA we use to drive deer...Pushers and Shooters now it is legal but do you think that is ethical?

I have accidentally ran a deer or two out of a thicket past a buddy before.

No, I've been in high-fenced properties and the hunting is no different than anywhere else, given adequate acreage inside the fence.

By "canned" hunts I mean where animals are released into a small area (an acre or two) where they are shot by someone who doesn't have the time/skill to actually hunt.

I've only hunted in TN, so I don't know what it's like hunting via other methods, like using dogs for deer.

As far as running shots, I don't have the confidence it doing it. If someone like warrent (excellent training with the paper in the rolling tire, btw!) or whoever can pull it off, more power to them. I know my limitations (and they are many!), so I hunt within those limitations. I hunt with some people who aren't as limited, but they have more time and experience than I do, so it's cool.

Not only were we good at shootin runnin deer, but we were good at shootin runnin deer while "runnin" them with airboats, wheel buggies, and tracks. Killing runnin deer is an art where I'm from. It's amazing how deadly a shotgun loaded with buckshot can be in the hands of a "cracker". That BH guy needs to leave the "runnin" shots to those of us who can shoot.

Good post... Nothing like a pump shotgun loaded with 00...

That would be good practice! Why didn't I think of that? \:D

maybe its just me but I don't think I would need to waste to many shells shootin at a rollin tire just to hit a moving a deer with a shotgun and 00 buck...
