Argument Sake..... BSK you are comparing apples and oranges...Ethical is the key word...I'm just talking hunting style that's all. It's not allowed here so I don't consider it. But the point was about something different or a different way of hunting ethical...Example: IF YOU HAVE NEVER ELK HUNTED THEN HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO COMMENT ON THE SUBJECT? I'm not blasting here please don't take it that way...I'm just not one to be closed minded now days like I once was, that's all. My way or the highway type...no more...

That's exactly what I'm talking about. We're not discussing legality, we're discussing ethics. I don't need to try something to know if it is or isn't ethical.

I am from North By God Carolina and moved here 4 years ago.
I've noticed deer hunters are different in this state from where I'm from. I've killed deer in every legal way from NC, bait, buckshot, hounds, stillhunting. Here it seems you have one choice.
My thoughts are that of previously mentioned. Don't condemn me for doing something legal that may not represent you particular ideas, especially if you have never experienced it. I was surprised at how civil the dog thread remained. I love it, but know personally that it would never work here.
Some will take this the wrong way, but its not intended to step on toes. To me alot of hunters in this state, take deer hunting way too seriously, and where I'm from, its just a laid back, feel good experience. Seems that has been lost sometimes here. Just a perspective from an outsider turned insider. To me, I just think theres more important things to worry about in life other than soils, buck limits, regions or "how Kentucky does it".
Not knocking no one, I guess everyone should feel passionate about a hobby, and I have killed my biggest deer in TN since I moved here, but I don't let it consume me.

I moved here 4 years ago and did most of my hunting in the north central part of S.C. before I got here. Bag limits were much more liberal than in E. Tenn. I think that probably has something to do with why folks in this part of the state are so passionate about "how it should be done." I never hunted over dogs, but I surely wouldn't begrudge anyone the opportunity to do it where it is legal. I'm for anything that brings new hunters to our ranks and keeps the ones we have involved. There is strength in numbers and the opportunity to hunt and fish will flourish as long as it's important to enough folks.

Good points guys. Deer Hunting here in Tennessee is different than some other parts of the Country for sure. Tactics some what change but The Magnificent Whitetail is still, well, just a Deer like it is other areas.

Who I'm with, The time afield I have, Bag Limits, Laws, Population (both Deer, and Hunters), Geography, Weather, etc, are all major factors in determining my particular Tactics. Why just settle for one.

IMO your Knowledge and Experience in killing deer is your #1 attribute. After all thats what we are all talking about here arn't we.
#2 If you have skills like say from hunting out West like me, Why would I not carry them with me on a deer hunt in Tennessee.

Hunting lots of other Animals helps me become a better Whitetail Deer Hunter to I believe. From shooting ground squirrels as a kid, Hunting Pheasants, and Grouse with my Dogs. (Good Dogs can be really fun to hunt with). Doing Deer pushes/drives (with people), To hunting Mule Deer (seems like they are always moving/running), Elk, Bear, and others, to shooting running Yots at over 100 yds easy.

As long as I am Safe, and Legal. I'm good to go, ready, and loving every minute of it.

Jumping a Big Buck from his bed, and killing him, plus Killing Big Game Animals on the Run is is counting coup in my book). Thrilling, Thrilling.

But I'm still learning, and open minded.
The Big Bucks usually have the drop on me still.
Gosh their fun... \:\)

The Late Jack O'Connor & many others think different.

Just don't surpass your skill level with your particular weapon, and you will be A>OK...

I agree, there some situations where its not bad at all. Every person is different, with different skills.

And just how would someone PRACTICE shooting at running deer? How would someone get good at it without missing and wounding many deer while honing his shooting skills....?

just curious......

BH,

Did you ever rabbit hunt as a kid? If so it's on a larger scale. Now before I get jumped here...I don't recommend shooting at a running deer. But I have and will again if I feel I can make the shot. That is the question can you make the shot?

BSK,

Of all people you being closed minded.... (Ethical) I have in the past hunted with dogs where it was legal and don't con-dim anyone that does. Just a different way of hunting.Just like I told BH, have you ever hunted rabbits with dogs....now is that ethical? Food for thought...

You can practice by shooting smaller animals on the run/fly 1st. Rock chuck, Coyote, Rabbit, Duck, Geese, Dove, Skeet, Clays, Hogs, what ever. Learn the art of lead, and follow through, and know your probable limitations. Distance, speed of game, wind, velocity, all are in play.

Like holdover, and wind it takes practice and experience.

Not your 1st shooting choice for sure, but comes in to play at times. Just like shooting without a rest. Many would never take a shot without one. Depends on your skill level, distance, and practice.

You can also practice with a targeted tire rolling down a hill too.

If you are afraid to only wound a deer, or miss, many would not begin to hunt in the first place I would think.

Heck look at the Bow Hunters. JK

not all hunters are the same.

I would rather get my kicks out of hunting a deer in it's natural travels than take pot shots at it running by me , just ahead of a pack of dogs.

I'd rather spend ten hours in a deer stand and see nothing, than spend two hours watching deer after deer run past me while I stand along a road.

And, not matter what you say, shooting at running deer is NOT ethical.....IMO.

? I'm confused. A deer and quail cant be running and a dove cant be sitting still. JK LOL

Everyone has their limits when it comes to marksmanship, JMO but in matters of ethical shots no one knows individual limits better than the person pulling the trigger, since no laws are being broken in the end you only have yourself to answer to.

As far as dogs running deer go. If you have a way of keeping your dogs on your property and its legal, I couldnt care less. Once they step foot on my land it then becomes a problem for me.
