We are going to put fall and winter food plots along the sides of the roads on our lease. The road sides range in width from 1 or 2 feet to 15 or 20 feet. There are also some areas that are like small fields at different places on the lease. Some of these areas are shady most of the day while other areas get a lot of sunlight. I think we should plant different strips in different plants ranging from wheat and clover to milo and corn with some turnip greens and rape for good measure. There is good native forage all over the lease and these food plots would just be a bonus for the deer.

What do you all think and do you have any other suggestions as far as plant types.

As long as these roads are not county roads and are on private property and maintained by the land owner or lease manager, then you are okay.......planting food plots along right of ways that are kept up by the state or county is not a good idea.....IMO.

We tried this on Chaney and found that maybe natural browse was the best and cheapest way to go......maybe put down some fertilizer and let nature take it's course.....

good luck

BH,

These roads are on the lease and not on a county road. The lease agreement allows us to do this but we have never done it before. The clubs around us put out food plots and we think we might be able to hold more deer if we have some variety for them. There is a tremendous amount of natural browse in the pine thickets and along trails all over the property but the club members want to try something like this.

Thanks for your input.

I'll give you a call when I get back. I might have some ideas.

By all means try it...At my old club in Ga on private property we did just what you want to do and yes it paid off big time. But we only used the roads to recover deer and didn't allow traffic up and down the roads. We planted all types of food but to be honest clover was the best there. Good luck and it is a great place to take young hunters to see and be able to take there first one....

Positives:

1) "Daylighted" roads and long, linear food plots along roads can produce far more acreage of food sources than you would expect. If just one 6-foot disk-width is planted on both sides of the road, for every mile of road-edge planted you've created around 1.5 acres (1.45 to be exact) of food plot. If you plant two disk-widths on both sides of the road (12-foot-wide strips on both sides), double that to almost 3.0 acres (2.9 to be exact) of food plot per mile of road.

2) Long, linear food plots along roads produce far, FAR more edge habitat than a square food plot of the same total acreage. Increasing edge habitat is always a good idea.

3) Road-edge food plots spreads out feeding pressure and the negative social pressures between doe social groups that often occur at small food plots.

Negatives:

1) Human traffic along road-edge food plots can reduce daylight usage of these plots. Now this doesn't deter night-time usage, but if hunters are wanting to hunt these plots...

2) Deer feeding pressure is spread out. This makes patterning deer traveling to food sources more difficult.
