True dat! But the recoil is a bit much for me! I'll keep my 7mm-08 and 308.

Well, the true beauty of the 45-70 lies in its versatility. Very mild loads can be created as well as full bore powerhouse T-Rex slayers.

One of my best loads is a 300 grain hollow soft point and 39 grains of Reloader 7. It's mild on recoil but a deer slayer!

I'm glad there are many calibers and action styles for rifles. It would be boring if everything were the same!

Yup, I used a Marlin 336C in 30-30 for many years. It killed a lot of deer.

I only use bolt guns now, but for the extra killing power instead of longer range. All my rifle kills are still under 60 yards, just like in the lever-action days.

Inside 60 yrds, I daresay nothing will kill quicker than a 444 marlin or a 45-70 due to the bore and large frontal area of the bullet. In the words of the great Elmer Keith "there is no substitute for a big hole"

Yup!
Although my my 338-06 is also becoming a pretty good thumper like my 444
Kick isn't bad with ether also.

My older 12ga kicks more than any of my rifle calibers. Especially with turkey loads, and 00 Buck.

And Yes 00 Buck Kills Deer well. I have killed two nice Bucks with it in WA state. Very legal...

For brute killing power 75 yards and closer, nothing is more deadly than a good 12 ga. slug, period! I carry a 7 mag pretty often for a lot of my areas, but I also use a little Remington .308 mtn rifle as often as I can, and it is likely the most accurate high power rifle I own to 150 yards, toss up with the lil Ruger .243! All these rifles are bolt guns, but after the first shot with any gun you are just playing catch up most times anyway! I agree 100% that accuracy is by far the most important factor, but we are all human and make mistakes and marginal shots! This is when having a little more gun will cover up mistakes that the smaller calibers will hurt your feelings on! Learning to be accurate shooting free handed and from multiple positions will pay big dividends as well!

I used to really enjoy "big bore" guns. And without question, big holes through deer kill them every time. But honestly, I've never seen anything like the face-slap-into-the-dirt true "knock down" affect of high velocity medium-weight bullets placed in the high shoulder shot. There really is something to that magic 3,000 ft/sec speed and it's ability to produce true instant knockout with the high shoulder shot. I've tried that with big bore guns (at least big but slow bullets) and had poor results.

Would the .270 fit in this category?
