i started out with a marlin 30-30 lever action. my dad bought it when he was 18yrs old. the gun is 30years old now and still looks brand spankin new. i think last year was probably the only year i never carried it hunting. thats 1 gun that will never have a price tag on it.

One of the reasons I decided to start this thread is, "things" tends to run in cycles...we are starting to hear more "grass- roots" traditional country music on radio for example. I believe the country's economic situation, though bad, may have the good effect of carrying us back to the simpler and more practical things in life. One such thing is the use of the simple, yet effective lever action rifle to "fill the freezer." I really believe a return to the basics will help all of us stop, think, and appreciate our blessings.

After my brother wounded two wallhangers in consecutive years with his "trusty" Marlin(on my lease), both within 75 yards, I finally bugged him enough to put it in the gun safe where it belongs, lol!

I retired mine because it deserved to be retired. The last animal killed with it was a fair bull elk at 235 yards. He went less than 30 yards.

Depending on where I am hunting, I will carry my .35 marlin or my .44 Ruger. I like them when I am in areas that any shot you might get will be close and you will probably only have a short time span to shoot in.

It's not the arrow, it's the Indian.

It's not the arrow, it's the Indian. Exactly right, but there are also many much more effective calibers out there than what most of the old lever guns were chambered in. Not all of them, but many.
