What if some wma's added a dog hunt? That way the dog hunters could have a hunt to themselves on a big piece of land.

That is the only way i can see it working.

I'm from VA originally and they do it there. The guys that would do it usually just sit on a gravel rd and let the dogs loose. the dogs run on to the property they have permission to hunt that butts to the road, but then they run on other people's property that butts to the property they're hunting. They usually drink beer and wait from the deer to cross the road then shoot them with buck shot on the run.

Can anyone imagine a bigger cluster**** than if two or more groups of hunters with dogs showed up in close proximity to each other and turned the dogs loose......?

I can't imagine the confusion.

I'd like to go back to the days when I first started deer hunting. A time when there were no wheelers on the market, very few pick-ups riding the roads and even fewer hunters out in the field.

I enjoyed deer hunting so much because it was so peaceful....."the quiet was deafening".....so to speak. Most days, you could count the shots heard on one hand.

I can not imagine the utter chaois that a pack of dogs and a half dozen rifle toting "jump shooters" would bring to such a peaceful setting.

In areas where I hunt there may be five different land owners in a 1000 acre block. How are you going to get permission from all of them to hunt across lines.....?

And what happens to those of us that love the peacefulness of a great deer hunt. Those of us that respect boundary lines and fences.......? What about us?

To me, IF this ever comes to pass in Tn. the only way to do it is to have a set season for dog hunting, maybe in late January after everyone else is done......other than that, there will be trouble and the court system will be full of dead dog pictures and busted lips.

Oh, and one last thing. if your dog, collared or not, runs a deer under me on my property, he better not stop. I've had dogs all of my life and love them, but there is a huge difference in a family pet and a deer running mongrel, even if some irresponsible hunter did put a collar on him and then turn him lose on an adjoining property . Bash me if you want, but I have just as much right to hunt peacefully on my lease or my own property as you do with your dogs on an adjoining property. Just because you use your dog's 'roaming/tracking" tendencies to defend his presence on my land , that does not take away from the fact that your dog is on my property without my permission. If you love the dog, take the time to train him to come off a track when called and never turn them out anywhere close to a property line or better yet, never hunt a property that is too small or that you know your dog may not stay on during a hunt. Even though you may not purposely allow your dog to cross a property line, that does not excuse the fact that the dog did and that is trespassing, plain and simple.

also, shooting at running deer is a horrible thing, IMO.

Not really, most dog hunters welcome those with other dogs and it happens regularily where two dog running clubs join each other. At the end of the day, everyone just put the hounds in the club's kennel and neighboring clubs know to check there to see if any of their hounds got mixed up in the chase. Its a lot more laid back than you'd think. Plust most run tracking collars on their hounds. And due to dwindling numbers of doggers, most all hound hunters recognized the common bond and welcome each others company.

Its all in what you enjoy, I love still hunting, but theres something about daylight in a swamp or on the edge of a cutover listening to a pack of deer hounds. It sends chills up my spine.
Anyone that knows anything about doghunting knows that you would'nt use a rifle to "jump shoot". If your "jump shooting" then you are obviously a dog "driver" and not a "stander". There is a place for rifles at times, but 95% of the time, a shotgun is the standard. Never seen a dog driver with a rifle, simply because it makes no sense.

Not neccesarily. In places where dogging is practiced. Many people think no more of shooting a running deer than still hunters think about shooting a deer standing still. And these guys are extremely good at it. I've done it once with a rifle and several times with a shotgun. You will never believe it until you've seen it for yourself, but there are guys out there who are unbeleivable shots while shooting running deer, the thing is, they think nothing of it.
