Coon hunting with dogs is quite a different matter than deer. Coon hunting is one my favorite things to do. Dogging deer is still very popular and practiced alot in my county and it causes so many problems that I cant even imagine what it would be like if it were actually legal. So definite no.
I haven't seen many ole coon dogs that wouldn't jump a deer ever once in a while.... Good thing they have tracking collars now a days..

I haven't seen many ole coon dogs that wouldn't jump a deer ever once in a while.... Good thing they have tracking collars now a days..
Nor beagles hunting rabbits.
I gave up on rabbit hunting in large part because my dogs kept running deer, and they would run them out of hearing and be gone for a day or two. More time was spent trying to find the dogs than hunt rabbits.

Think it is a great part of the heritage of deer hunting, and a heck of a lot of fun when done on the right piece of ground. IMO it is more about being out with friends then it is about hunting.
It is slowly dying in the South however, as it gets painted in a bad light.

I have no ethical problems at all with deer hunting with dogs. But I have a SERIOUS problem with the way it is practiced. Dogs don't know property lines, and if dogs chase deer across my property, no matter how expensive those dogs are, they're going to "disappear..."
I have enough problems with my neighbors' muts chasing deer now...

One time I didn't like the idea of playing golf while in college and only thought wimps played golf... Shortly after I was introduced to golf and spent many yrs chasing that little white ball and even got pretty good at it..... My point is that's its hard to knock something until you try it... I learned that lession a few times... Sorry to get off subject.

I grew up on deer drives in S.C. Hearing a black and tan jump a deer in the cypress swamps and then turn your way about made me pee in my pants with excitement. Those were some good times. But like most said you need big tracks of land or adjoining clubs that would not get bent out of shape with the dogs running on their property. Would love to hunt with dogs again just don't think it would work here.

Done it as well and growing up hunting rabbits with dogs, I loved it. Luckily we had a large parcel of land to do it on.

My point is that's its hard to knock something until you try it...
I would generally agree with that.
Back when I was growing up, I used to take my bird dogs and walk miles in one direction, crossing farm after farm. Sometime around late morning or mid-day, I would start circling back towards the farmhouse. Back then, there were no posted signs, and you could pretty much bird hunt where you pleased, provided you knew the landowners, which we did. We were neighbors.
I can go back to the farm, but I cannot take off bird hunting like I once did. Not because I couldn't still make the walk and keep up with the dogs, but because the land ownership has been greatly fragmented, and most of it is posted. And worse, I have no idea who owns most of it anymore.
I wish more could experience a day of bird hunting behind dogs like that. But that opportunity is just no longer so readily available. Things change.

Dogging deer is definitely a fun and unique experience, and everybody should have the pleasure of trying it atleast once. That being said, I agree that many areas in TN simply arent large enough to do it without having trouble from multiple landowners.
