Interesting that you should say that, as from what I understand, most of the places that still allow dog hunting for deer are in places where it would be very difficult to effectively hunt deer by the more traditional ways. HUGE swamps are what come to mind in Florida Everglades and parts of South Carolina.

Right on. I have hunted with dogs several times in Eastern NC. Time honored tradition but it is slowly fading away. Logistically speaking, it would be a nightmare to start a dog season. Although it sounds like you just "drop the tailgate", there is an art to doing it successfully and seeing as how this state has no "legal" doggers, those who decide to get dogs, would probably ruin it, seeing as how they would know nothing about it. Deer don't run like rabbits, coons, bears. Some circle, some stay just in front of the dogs, and some will haul a$$ for miles straight away. I have been all over this state and the only place that seems like it could be feasible would be extreme west TN.
I would want no less than 1000 continous acres before I even considered turning a deer hound loose. I hunted with a club near the coast that had 9000 continous acres and they still had problems with dogs getting off the property at times.
The places where dogging is most traditional are places that are so thick and wet that it would be humanly impossible to still hunt. I've been in places so thick that you had to belly crawl in and out...no fun! Hardly no trees, just shrub type bushes and pines. Absolutely loaded with deer though.
Every year, there seems to be new laws brought up pertaining to one county or another banning dog running for deer in NC. Pretty much, anywhere east of Raliegh can run dogs, west of there is illegal
I love it and have killed several deer in front of dogs, but I honestly think it would be a tremendously bad idea to dog deer in a state that has not previously allowed it.

I grew up hunting deer and coon hunting with dogs down in FL. Great social and Southern sport. I'm not for pushing regs that would allow running deer with dogs but I do shake my head a little when I hear some of the reasons why it couldn't be done in TN. I always wonder how some people can give an opinion on something that they never tried....

My dad and my son going coon hunting this summer down in FL. Looks like fun to me.... \:\)

I don't doubt that for a second.
Not only that, but I'm sure would enjoy it myself, and will probably do it within the next few years. I've hunted about everything else there is to hunt with dogs, and enjoyed it all.

But that doesn't change the fact it would be a bad idea to start doing it in Tennessee.

Should also add that while I plan to enjoy going on a dog hunt for deer some day where it is a legal tradition, I have no desire to go hunt deer over a bait pile where that's a legal tradition. Just different strokes for different folks.

Coon hunting with dogs is quite a different matter than deer. Coon hunting is one my favorite things to do. Dogging deer is still very popular and practiced alot in my county and it causes so many problems that I cant even imagine what it would be like if it were actually legal. So definite no.

Great southern tradition and part of our heritage. Last time I checked, Tennessee was below the mason-dixon line.
