Tikkashooter and I spent the morning early deer scouting, turkey scouting and shed hunting. I found this one "shed". Do you supposed this broke off in a fight? Notice it is not a clean "drop off" from the pedicle, it has part of the skull on the horn.

The spot where this shed was found has been hunted quite thoroughly in the last several years and if a dead deer had been laying there, it would have been known for sure. We pushed the leaves away, and didn't find any bones or other "evidence" of a dead deer. Still, we couldn't tell if this was from a shed, or in fact if it had been broken off. The shed was found within 100 yards of one of the treestands...

In part because it appears to have come from a yearling buck, I suspect he was approaching "shed" time, and simply accidently broke it off, taking part of his skull with it.
My thinking is a yearling would be more likely to hit his antler against something, like a tree, a limb, or even just the ground.
Certainly wasn't a normal non-traumatic shed.

My understanding is that this is not an uncommon occurrence. I can't remember the exact source I heard it from, but I believe that one of the most common natural causes of death in bucks is brain abscesses and infections from pedicle / skull injuries related to antlers being shed or broken off too early. I have found a few just like the one pictured over the years.

I was taught that many yearling bucks do not have the pedicle maturity to always cleanly shed an antler, therefore you find them like the one above. There shouldn't be any skull damage and the deer should be fine.
