When you are in your stand and you think you are miles away from
anything, what are some unexpected sounds that you have heard?
I'm not talking about other hunters or unexpected vehicles, but
something that is really strange or totally unexpected.

Sound in a quiet woods carries for a very long distance, as many
of you know.

I like to pick out different bird calls and different bug sounds....nothing really unexpected, but more just cool.

I did hear , one time, what I thought was a weird sounding bull frog croaking , but it turned out to be that burrito that I ate the night before...lol.

Some type of foghorn sounding horn that the loggers started using a few years ago way back behind my property when they started logging early in the morning. \:D Didn't know what the heck that thing was for a while!

A buddy of mine told me he kept hearing something that sounded like someone bouncing a beach ball up at Catoosa. When I went in there with him one day I heard it, and I guess it was a grouse flapping its wings.

How about the things you cannt hear?
Sitting in tree stand in northern Saskatchewan.Snow filled trees and landscape. No wind,no cars or trucks no airplanes,no dogs barking,no beeping sounds,no birds,no phones buzzing,no train whistles,no gun shots.Total silence.
Its nice sometimes.Try it.

While on stand one morning years ago in Ms. I heard a squalking sound getting closer and closer. In a few minutes I had an ostrich walk by me. Seems someone had a few that got lose and one came by me in the woods. The guy I was hunting with still doesn't believe me.

I once heard a metal filing cabinet being drug across an expanse of concrete. That's the only way I can describe it and I hit the ground running. I was at least 20 miles from any concrete or human habitation. To this day I have no idea what it was.

I can tell you this: Bears can make sounds you wouldn't believe. They make a sound like water running down a drain pipe. Ravens make sounds that are impossible to make. I once watched some kinda kizzard scream.

When I was in IL hunting for the 1st time, I noticed a consistent clanking that sounded like a flag holder pinging the a flagpole. It was an oil well thingy about 1/4 mile away.

In my younger days hunting in Lewis county out in the middle of
the woods, I heard a strange sound that I had never heard before.
I was only 15 yeas old and I had never heard a peacock do it's
call. I was freaking out, wondering what in the world that was
making that sound.

Come to find out later, the farm where I was hearing the peacock
was 3 miles away (as a crow flies). I was on a high ridge and it
was a cold and very still morning. It sounded alot closer than
that and I am still amazed at the ways sounds travel in the
woods on a still frosty morning.

Several years ago I was hunting South Cherokee on Chillhowee Mtn. I kept hearing a whining whistling sound that kept getting louder and louder. Look as i might, I couldn't find the source of the sound and was starting to get spooked. Finally I saw a shadow and looked up and there was a glider about 150 feet above me. The sounds I was hearing were from the wind crossing the wings of the glider. \:D \:D

In October, I used to hear a really loud and drawn out siren, like an air-raid siren. I would hear it every year about the same time.

Turned out to be the warning siren used to warn fisherman away from the giant pumps used to pump water out of the Duck River and into the waterfowl impoundments of the nearby migratory waterfowl refuge.

Can think of several "unexpected", but one that "scared" me most was a low-flying fighter jet that "sounded" like it was breaking the sound barrier. Just sitting on stand with bow in lap, enjoying the tranquility, when suddenly was like a bomb had been dropped on my tree.

A fox can make a terrible noise and they tend do it right at dark. Now a true story.

Several years ago, either the National Guard or some outfit from Ft. Campbell had been in AL on some manuevers. They were transporting their jeeps and stuff home, slung under some kind of big helicopters. I see them coming and am watching when one of the jeeps comes loose and crashes through the trees about 200 yards from me. It then explodes. Within an hour the whole place was crawling with MP's.

In turkey season this year i heard something walking behind me that was heavy. I turned my head and it left in a hurry making whooshing and screaming sound and an awesome thud everytime it hit the ground. It was heavy. In about five seconds i got a text from a buddy and it said what in the world was that? I still have no idea.

Having to hear "in da club" by fitty cent really takes you outta the mood while bowhunting,I guess neighbors don't consider the guy across the road on top of the ridge trying to hunt.

A year or so later this same neighbor decided to come out on his porch and sing bubububububbaaaad...bad to tha bone!! at the top of his lungs, what was worse was all he new was the chorus...he had to be drunk.

One morning up a tree, I kept hearing a short off and on rumbling whoosh sound that kept getting louder coming from behind me. Finally this big hot air ballon crested over the ridge blowing the propane to get more altitude.

Not hi-jacking but.........

As kids we used to have the problem of helicopters from the local airport a couple miles away in Smyrna, National Guard unit. We would be out flying kites in the field with several hundred feet of string run out.

3 different times one fall, helicopters circled around and actually flew through the string / kite! Obviously destroyed the kites and string but also had to wrap string around the helicopter rotor I'd think.

After the 2nd time as totally pissed off kids, our parents told us if it happened again to remember the I.D. numbers on the helicopter. So 3rd time, we got the number and our parents called the unit. Gave the I.D. number and day and time to the C.O.'s office.

NEVER EVER had another kite lost after that! ;\)

He came in low and all i could hear was the whop whop whop of the blades. he then proceeded to hover above me while I held on for dear life and then he set down to my eye level in the opening out from me. They were laughing and pointing the whole time. If i had an extra hand i may have made some obscene jestures back.

Wonder how funny he would think it was after a few rounds were shot at him in self defense...... I would have been waiting for him at the heli-pad..... see how funny his payback would be.
