Is it possible to kill too many does ?

I know a club that hammers them every year.

In what ways can this be detrimental to the health of the herd other than eliminating the breeding stock.....?

Any long term problems with massive "overkill" of does?

Just curious...

If they keep "hammering" them IMO they still have does to kill. They will become harder to kill eventually and that's when most people back off.

I believe that you can kill too many does, and many clubs across the deep south have done just that over the last few years. It can have a serious and long term impact on the overall herd dynamics.

Far too many folks IMO waded out into the QDMA's "shoot all the does" philosophy without having any firm grasp of the population densities in their area, and how their actions would effect that population.

"Cow Island hunting club" killed to many does a few years back and at the same time they also killed to many younger bucks, it got the entire hunting club out of balance for 2-3 years

I was told this by one of the owners/members

Twice I've had hunters call me and ask what's going on with the deer on their property. They say they've heard that you should shoot every doe you see. So not only did they shoot every doe but they talked all their neighbors into shooting every doe. They did this for a few years and now their trail cameras aren't picking up many deer.

Go figure...

The one-size-fits-all management prescriptions that hunters pick up out of magazines can easily do more harm than good in some areas. My best advice is...be careful what you do out there and consult a qualified biologist if you are unsure.

FYI - when I say qualified biologist it's pretty simple. If they immediately prescribe a management plan without asking for or collecting data...they probably are NOT qualified.

First, define "too many."

But second, you can put a world of hurt on a doe population (or total deer population) depending on several factors. The most critical of these factors are 1) the size of the area you are talking about; 2) how much thick cover exists on the property; 3) how much "sanctuary" deer have access to (areas unhunted by man); and 4) what are the harvest policies and habitat/sanctuary conditions on surrouding properties?

If sanctuary or good escape cover exist in adequate quantity, it can be very difficult to put much of a dent in a deer population. Heavily pressured deer will rapidly find and use that sanctuary, greatly reducing their susceptibility to harvest. This can even mean moving to an adjoining property where doe harvest pressure is lower, or to a neighboring property where no hunting is allowed.

On the flip side, if a property has little escape cover, has no designated sanctuary areas, all surrounding properties are the same, and everyone--including the neighbors--decides to pound does, you can flat knock a population down quick.
