It's a little like camo.... You can kill deer without it but it might help....or you can buy a red & black flannel shirt.. thats true

stinky not
"Go ahead, break like the wind!" (apologies to Spinal Tap).
We kind of poked fun of the industry before everybody else was laughing.
Scent-Lok. Marketing, it was all marketing. People do it every day. Looks like these guys might have got caught being greedy.
Anybody remember when Nike came out with the shoes with the window in the soles? You could actually "see" the air in there...wow! Did we get our moneys worth or what? Paying for the extra air in the soles, that we could also SEE!
As for Scent-Lok. I used it. When I first got it, it seemed like sometimes it was like the deer smelled a "cold track" they could wind you, but it was like, it was not instant alarm. When I noticed instant alarm, it was time to wash and air out the scent-lok. Probably any insulated bibs woulda worked as well...baking soda and air out. dunno.
All in all like the old timers, that hunted in bib overalls told me, "You'll be suprised how you can hide in the wide open, if you just be still and use the wind." LOL.

Use the wind, now thats a novel idea! The best advice for a deer hunter and as long as i can remember it was given was,.......pay attention to the wind and hunt accordingly. Frances E. Sell would even give long dissertations on thermal currents etc etc....all i remember about them was two things. In the morning they rise with the warming sun, in the evening they fall with the setting suns lower angle and therfore in the morn you should be set up higher with calmer conditions and in the evening set up lower with the falling thermals....a little complicated for me in some situations....but i always hunt with the wind in my favor....period.

My grandfather was Cherokee. Wise and an elder at the resevation. He did not live to be 99 by being unwilling to learn. And to teach others was his passion. So I will share what he taught me.
Find the forage the deer are eating in the area you are hunting. Gather it, plants let it dry. Nuts acorns save until a week be for the season.
Take you gatherings and simmer them in an old covered pot kind let it cook down. Until you can see to natural oils seperating. Reserve the liquid. Place the gathering in an old Nylon stocking prior to your hunt wash your clothing with the gathering sack allow to air dry. You will smell yummy.
The liquid you can mix with water and put in a spray bottle and freshen up with.
Also go to other areas not remotely close to your area, find beds gather dirt from them and save in zip lock bags. Rubs scrapes, etc. and do the same. A deer in rut or not, will not stand for a unfamilar deer in his area. And will investigate it instanly. So place the gatherings 20 to 50 yard from where your primary stands or blinds will be.
Also fresh take cedar branch cuttings on windy days.
Very low cost and a few trips to the woods, better than honey do's or a good use for a sick day a work! Good luck

I have tried to hunt the wind in E. TN only to find out that it will blow in four different directions in a 4 hour period... Hunting the wind sounds like a great plan until it starts blowing through the mountains of E. TN

Man... I just ordered and received from Cabelas a couple months ago... SCENTLOK... 2 pair of coveralls, one pair bibbs, and one rain coat (on sale). I have used this stuff for approx. 8 yrs. I don't know if it works or I have become a better hunter over the yrs. I have had good look and had deer down wind from me that didn't pick me up.. I had two does and one yeerling hang around me for approx. an hour down wind and never picked me up. I also use cover scents so I don't know if that played a factor.. I'm a scent nut and go to extremes... Spruce needles in my bag that contains my hunting clothes.. I don't want to here hunt the wind considering I hunt the mountains of E. TN were the winds will blow in several directions during a four hr. period.
