Where do you hunt and if you had to pick 1 day the rut is at its peak what day would that be?

Montgomerey, Robertson, Cheatham, Stewart counties- November the 8th! No doubt- that day has always been a "money maker" for me! I have shot bucks either trailing or chasing does on this day for many years. I will do some pretty extreme stuff to get that day off of work!

Maury County. Anytime in November or early December. There is no certain day, but if I only had one choice, I would pick a nice frosty morning in the middle of November.

DEPENDS on how you define "peak".
Peak buck roaming or peak breeding?
I think some are confusing great pre-peak buck movement with "peak" rut. Right before a lot of does come in, but right when a few do, the bucks can start going crazy, greatly increasing their daylight linear movement. Just my observation, but seems the younger bucks (3 1/2 and younger) are more involved in this "frenzy" than mature bucks (who seem to know it's just not time yet). I usually see this sometime between November 5 and 15th, but weather (mainly temperature) is the primary factor regarding my observations.
But when peak breeding hits (a week or two later), sometimes it can almost seem like the rut has come and gone, as many of the bucks are with estrous does instead of out looking for them.
After most of the does have been bred, there seems to be another flurry of buck activity, and this is the period I've been most successful on mature bucks. This is usually late November, although the real flurry of buck sightings is in early November. Sometime around the 1st week of December, it's like someone flips a switch, and most daytime buck roaming just ends. At least that has been my typical annual experience in Stewart County.

Ooops. I misread your topic. I just noticed you said "Peak Rut". I would say that Thanksgiving is usually the peak where I hunt. November the 8th is just a magical chase day!

If its peak daylight buck movement your asking about, and I had to pick a single day, here in East TN that would be November 24'th. In Illinois it would be more like November 8'th

BGG,
I agree completely with that data from the 70s through 90s. However, I seem to be seeing a slight shift forward since the buck age structure has changed so dramatically in the last decade. I used to pick Nov. 17-18 as the peak dates in my area (Region 2), but now I would shift it forward about a week to Perhaps Nov. 11-12.

I agree completely. I would love to have a continuous data set but unfortunately some things get axed when budget cuts are made.

In southern wayne county in years past i would say the second muzzleloader hunt is peak, but i agree with BSK. It seems in the last few years it has been a week or two earlier.

Good info BGG, parts of the state especially Northwestern area, LBL and Fort Campbell I've seen a trend in the rut basically a 2week period that's hot but other parts of the state heck its a coin flip it varies so much and those variations vary from region to region. You can see a buck chasing a doe in October-Janurary!

I believe I have a good feel for peak chasing dates for Middle and West TN. I have some idea what is going on on the Plateau. But East of the Plateau, there seems to be almost no rhyme or reason to the dates I hear. I've never been able to get a handle on the I-75 corridor or mountain dates.

It can be a little squirrely here BSK, but it is still pretty reliable, but like anywhere the weather plays a huge role in daytime movement!

You all are dead on the money. In the last decade we have had our place, I have seen it move forward (earlier) by a week or so. And yes, these last couple of years have had stupid little heat spells for the 2 weeks it needed to be cold. All we can do is cross our fingers year after year that Mother Nature wants to play along

Leap year and how thanksgiving falls seems to affect it here in middle tennessee. I am convinced the chasing is usually in by opening day of deer season when it hits a round the 20th. i personally feel the first two weeks of december is the peak for us as far as effectiveness. after that it seems to be hit and miss . not doubt in my mind the seeking and just before the chasing phase seems to be when i get on the bigger bucks the best. by the time they are breeding it seems harder to find them on the move as much as they seem to get off in the thickets and are hard to see.

Last year, according to all my cameras, the deer were on the move BIG TIME the first 2 weeks in December....during daylight and everything. Thats a sure sign that its hot.
I tell ya what, cameras sure do help me in figuring out the time I'm gonna take off for future years to catch the "right time" of the rut. Now if the weather and temps cooperate, you should be seeing some action

I've always liked thanksgiving weekend. But, the farm I've been hunting (Hamblen co.) the last 5 years the week of Christmas has been best. I usually don't hunt the 24th or 25th but right before or after these dates I have seen several different bucks "cruising" or running with a doe. I know that about 10 miles from this place there are farms that are virtually dead at this time. According to some of the fawns I see in early bow season I think the does are bred predominately in this time. The fella that cuts the hay on the farm has yet to see any on the first cut. But usually his second cut is when he sees the newborns and has to be careful.
