Another one of mine was on Thanksgiving morning in the early 80's. I hunted until only 10:45, because I had to be at our family's dinner at 12:30. It was a rather warm morning, and I had not seen a single deer all morning. I was enjoying the morning and the beautiful weather, but I had become displaced about my area.
I got down and started to walk back to the house when I decided to sit down a rest on a tree trunk that had been blown over by a previous storm. I was sort of day dreaming and thinking about the turkey and dressing.
All of the sudden, I heard a noise in the leaves. I look up and there was a good racked buck coming by me with his nose to the ground. No time to whistle or grunt, I just placed my cross hairs behind his shoulder and pulled the trigger. My 130 grain .270 bullet double lunged him and the started to weave.
I was late for the "dinner", but so was all the rest of my family. They all came to the house to see my 9 point buck. They took pictures and then we all went to eat. I know many might not understand that, but you have to know my family.
Never give up or think there are no deer around.

This is a great subject! Seems every good buck I ever killed came about when I least expected it. I really cannot remember killing many deer on those days when you are sitting on the stand saying to yourself, "this is a perfect day...this is it, one is going to step out any minute!!!". It is always at times when I say to myself, "I ain't gonna see nothing today!!!".
Examples:
Out of 5 bucks I have on my wall:
2 of them I killed while I was rummaging through my backpack - NOT because I needed anything, but because I was bored, already decided I wasn't going to see anything and I was looking for something to entertain me.
1 of them a buddy dropped me off at a place. He really didn't know much about deer hunting back then. I said to myself "I bet there ain't a deer in a 100 miles of here." No sooner had I said that, a doe came by me with a nice 10 point on her trail.
1 of them I killed at 11:30 one morning. It was toward the end of the first gun season. I had seen some deer at another location a few days before. I was trying to get my buddy a deer, so I put him in that place and I just hunted a location I had never hunted before. Hadn't seen a deer all morning - decided I wouldn't see any. Here comes a doe prancing by me...I looked back behind her and there is the biggest buck I ever killed.
1 of them killed at 10 am. I hadn't seen a deer and was thinking to myself, "oh well, I have overhunted this stand", since I had hunted 3 or 4 times over a couple of week period. All of a sudden a spike was heading my direction. While I was debating about shooting him or not, I looked behind him and here come the biggest deer I had ever seen (at that point in my life) following him. My biggest bow kill to date. 164lbs (field dressed) 8 pointer.
5 out of 5 on my wall were killed when, to one degree or another, I was not expecting it. I always stress to less experienced hunters - stay in the stand as long as can. Don't give up just cause you are bored. You never know!

The 10 I shot last year was completely unexpected. we were looking for a deer one of my buddies shot and were down in a river bottom looking in the river cane and making all kind of noise. I started to walk up onto a small knoll where two ridges converged to create a draw and was standing there. heard something coming down the ridge and looked up and here comes this deer walking down the hill right to me. I shouldered my MZ and waited until he was within 30 yds and shot him. he ran about 75 yds and piled up.

I pulled up to the inlaw's place and did my routine of changing into my hunting clothes and realized I didn't bring my scentless deodorant with me. I forgot something else, but I don't remember what it was--probably my scentkiller spray. I remember getting frustrated, thinking that I would'nt see any deer, since they'd wind me without the scentless stuff. Anyways, I went ahead and walked out to the stand--might as well, since I drove all the way out there at 5:30 am!
So I'm sitting there in the stand, losing confidence and thinking I'm not even going to see a deer, let alone kill one. I'm just playing on my phone, and then I see movement. A doe is trotting in my direction...no wait, two does. And what is that...that's a buck! All three are headed in my direction alongside an overgrown grassline. The buck breaks into a full-on chase of one of the does! The are on the other side of the grassline in front of my stand, probably 80ys, if I had to guess. Certainly within range, but with the overgrown grassi in front of me, I didn't have a clear shot. So I just watched the chase.
Pretty cool, considering I thought I was just wasting my time.

Good story moondawg. Scentless deodorant and scent spray, I guess can help, but you never know what can happen if you do forget them.
Good luck to you this upcoming season...deodorant..scent spray... or not.

True, you never know what you'll see.
Next season,I will definitely keep the essentials stowed away in the truck!

Another story when I least expected to see a deer.
I was hunting one morning and after getting fidgety, I decided to get down from the stand and do some scouting. I left my gun at the stand to check out the view from another stand about 75 yds to the north of me. I walked slowly and climbed up, taking in the view. I decided I liked the other stand better, as it was in a better location in regards to deer travel patterns. I looked around and I saw 2 does about 400 yds downfield. I walked (slowly) back to the stand and got my gun, and didn't see any deer. I figured they ran off, I never saw them leave since my line of sight was blocked by a hill or two.
At that point, I figured I'd try still hunting. I walked S-L-O-W-L-Y downfield along the treeline, stopping to look every few yards. After a while of doing this, I noticed something from the corner of my eye...like something was behind me. I turned my head slowly and so a doe standing there about 50 yds away, staring at me...probably wondering what in the world was this moron doing walking around so wierd. I could almost feel it watching me, and I knew that as soon as I moved, she would run off. I turned around slowly, and sure enough, she bolted so quick I could'nt get a shot off.
No, I didn't kill a deer that day, but I saw them when I least expected to see them.
