How many of you have killed a deer, when you least expected to?
I have always told young hunters that don't have very much
experience, to never let their guard down. You never know when
that buck (or doe) will suddenly "appear".

One of mine was in 1971. I came back to camp to eat lunch and
started to make a sandwich. We were camped right out in the deer
woods on (what I found out later) a good spot that deer crossed.
I happend to look up and look down the ridge we were camped on
and all the sudden there is a deer standing 90 yards down the
the ridge, like a statue.

I get my .270 with my Redfield Widefield scope and see that the
deer was a legal buck. I shot and killed the deer, but I don't
think I ate anything until about 8:00 that night on opening day.
I was looking forward to that bologna sandwich with a spear of
dill pickle, but it was well worth missing lunch.

I know ya'll have some good ones, so please share your stories.

Most of the time I kill or see a good one when I least expect it. I don't know why it works out like that but it does. I shot the biggest 8 point I had ever seen with 25 mph winds. He just appeared at 8:30 am in a bottom when I knew I wasn't going to see anything. Seems like I have had several similar situations where I thought there would be no way I would see a good one.

So now I sit in my stand and play mind games with myself all day. I just keep telling myself I'm not going to see a good one!

in jan. when the doe season opens around here me and a buddy always do some deer drives just for fun to get a few does for the freezer and he lets me out on the end of a long ridge and he goes around to the other end, i'm just sitting there giving him time to get set up and all the sudden i hear a deer grunting loud so i turn around and here comes a 125" 9pt following a doe and they are walking right at me and i had my old win. model 94 with open sights, they get to within 20yds and put him down, thats the only deer a ever killed with that gun.

i didn't expect to be the one doing the shooting and thats one reason i took that gun and i wanted it to be more of a challenge to try and get a doe with that gun

Many many times, thats why I always say you cant kil them from the couch! I learned a long time ago that even when everything isnt perfect, just being there atleast gives you a chance to kill one, where staying home is a guarantee to fail!

Not really when I least expected it BUT a couple years ago a young doe gave me 4 bow shots on it. I shot twice, it ran right under me. I shot again and it ran in the overgrown hedges. I climb down get my arrow and it comes out again after I return up the tree! I shot again and then had to watch it walk around since I had no more arrows!

The deer I have killed that were somewhat unexpected does not come to mind near a much as the deer I have let escape because I wasn't expecting to see one...I learnt far more from the ones that got away too...

my biggest bucks to date were when i least expected it.
i killed a 120'' 8pt off the ground at about 30 yards away. i was laying down on a ridge and it was drizzling rain off and on and me and my buddy were just messing around being loud and here comes a deer. i pull myself up and he never looks over or anything. i put the crosshairs on him and my buddy stops him and i lay him down. cant believe i killed a deer like that but i did.

killed my crazy looking 13pt on a rainy afternoon. had been working on a water leak til about 3:30 that afternoon and finally had a chance to get out of there so i did. me and big8's got to the property and i wasnt in my stand 5 mins and had 2 dogs follow my scent trail to my stand. i get down, cuss them as loud as i can (big8's even heard me from aways away and called me telling me to shutup) and walk to a different stand. was there 5 mins and had 2 does come out. out of anger i dropped 1 of them. got down when and made sure it was dead and pretty much ran back to the first stand i was hunting it that day and got back in it. was there about 15 mins and out steps the buck at 125yds. i shot him and dropped him and big8's calls and ask what the crap are you shooting at now. we both couldnt believe how that day turned out.

Another one of mine was on Thanksgiving morning in the early
80's. I hunted until only 10:45, because I had to be at our
family's dinner at 12:30. It was a rather warm morning, and I had
not seen a single deer all morning. I was enjoying the morning
and the beautiful weather, but I had become displaced about my
area.

I got down and started to walk back to the house when I decided
to sit down a rest on a tree trunk that had been blown over by a
previous storm. I was sort of day dreaming and thinking about the
turkey and dressing.

All of the sudden, I heard a noise in the leaves. I look up and
there was a good racked buck coming by me with his nose to the
ground. No time to whistle or grunt, I just placed my cross hairs
behind his shoulder and pulled the trigger. My 130 grain .270
bullet double lunged him and the started to weave.

I was late for the "dinner", but so was all the rest of my
family. They all came to the house to see my 9 point buck. They
took pictures and then we all went to eat. I know many might not
understand that, but you have to know my family.

Never give up or think there are no deer around.

This is a great subject! Seems every good buck I ever killed came about when I least expected it. I really cannot remember killing many deer on those days when you are sitting on the stand saying to yourself, "this is a perfect day...this is it, one is going to step out any minute!!!". It is always at times when I say to myself, "I ain't gonna see nothing today!!!".

Examples:

Out of 5 bucks I have on my wall:

2 of them I killed while I was rummaging through my backpack - NOT because I needed anything, but because I was bored, already decided I wasn't going to see anything and I was looking for something to entertain me.

1 of them a buddy dropped me off at a place. He really didn't know much about deer hunting back then. I said to myself "I bet there ain't a deer in a 100 miles of here." No sooner had I said that, a doe came by me with a nice 10 point on her trail.

1 of them I killed at 11:30 one morning. It was toward the end of the first gun season. I had seen some deer at another location a few days before. I was trying to get my buddy a deer, so I put him in that place and I just hunted a location I had never hunted before. Hadn't seen a deer all morning - decided I wouldn't see any. Here comes a doe prancing by me...I looked back behind her and there is the biggest buck I ever killed.

1 of them killed at 10 am. I hadn't seen a deer and was thinking to myself, "oh well, I have overhunted this stand", since I had hunted 3 or 4 times over a couple of week period. All of a sudden a spike was heading my direction. While I was debating about shooting him or not, I looked behind him and here come the biggest deer I had ever seen (at that point in my life) following him. My biggest bow kill to date. 164lbs (field dressed) 8 pointer.

5 out of 5 on my wall were killed when, to one degree or another, I was not expecting it. I always stress to less experienced hunters - stay in the stand as long as can. Don't give up just cause you are bored. You never know!

The 10 I shot last year was completely unexpected. we were looking for a deer one of my buddies shot and were down in a river bottom looking in the river cane and making all kind of noise. I started to walk up onto a small knoll where two ridges converged to create a draw and was standing there. heard something coming down the ridge and looked up and here comes this deer walking down the hill right to me. I shouldered my MZ and waited until he was within 30 yds and shot him. he ran about 75 yds and piled up.

I pulled up to the inlaw's place and did my routine of changing into my hunting clothes and realized I didn't bring my scentless deodorant with me. I forgot something else, but I don't remember what it was--probably my scentkiller spray. I remember getting frustrated, thinking that I would'nt see any deer, since they'd wind me without the scentless stuff. Anyways, I went ahead and walked out to the stand--might as well, since I drove all the way out there at 5:30 am!

So I'm sitting there in the stand, losing confidence and thinking I'm not even going to see a deer, let alone kill one. I'm just playing on my phone, and then I see movement. A doe is trotting in my direction...no wait, two does. And what is that...that's a buck! All three are headed in my direction alongside an overgrown grassline. The buck breaks into a full-on chase of one of the does! The are on the other side of the grassline in front of my stand, probably 80ys, if I had to guess. Certainly within range, but with the overgrown grassi in front of me, I didn't have a clear shot. So I just watched the chase. \:\)

Pretty cool, considering I thought I was just wasting my time.

Good story moondawg. Scentless deodorant and scent spray, I guess
can help, but you never know what can happen if you do forget
them.

Good luck to you this upcoming season...deodorant..scent spray...
or not.

Another story when I least expected to see a deer.

I was hunting one morning and after getting fidgety, I decided to get down from the stand and do some scouting. I left my gun at the stand to check out the view from another stand about 75 yds to the north of me. I walked slowly and climbed up, taking in the view. I decided I liked the other stand better, as it was in a better location in regards to deer travel patterns. I looked around and I saw 2 does about 400 yds downfield. I walked (slowly) back to the stand and got my gun, and didn't see any deer. I figured they ran off, I never saw them leave since my line of sight was blocked by a hill or two.

At that point, I figured I'd try still hunting. I walked S-L-O-W-L-Y downfield along the treeline, stopping to look every few yards. After a while of doing this, I noticed something from the corner of my eye...like something was behind me. I turned my head slowly and so a doe standing there about 50 yds away, staring at me...probably wondering what in the world was this moron doing walking around so wierd. \:D I could almost feel it watching me, and I knew that as soon as I moved, she would run off. I turned around slowly, and sure enough, she bolted so quick I could'nt get a shot off.

No, I didn't kill a deer that day, but I saw them when I least expected to see them.

One year during MZ I had not seen a deer all day. Around 3 pm a bunch of dogs started chasing deer in my area. This went all for about an hour when I decided to give up for the day. I had already lowered my pack to the ground when I realized the dogs were getting closer. I was standing with my MZ in my hand as I decided to try and shoot one of the dogs if i could for ruining my afternoon hunt. As I stood there looking to the right, I caught movement out of the corner of my left eye. I turned to see a buck sneaking down a ridge 80 yards away. I shot and was able to drop the buck.

Not only did I not expect to see anything because of the dogs, I ended up making my longest MZ shot in all my years of hunting. \:\)

My last hunt was years ago , 1998 was the year and AEDC was the place . IT was a M/L rifle or shotgun hunt. My old high school hunting buddy Gary and me went in his Chevy Z-71 truck and he had a deer come up behind his stand but he was facing a field we were near instead of the woods behind him that afternoon. I told him to look toward the woods but to the field he faces and the buck saw him first. I was hidden in a finger of woods hat judded into the field from some private land on the logging road and he must have thought my spot was better than the trail he was on . LOL
