The Grandpa's Gun thread got me to thinking about all the "characters" involved in our memories. That thread had alot of truely unique people and "characters" in it. And I became hard pressed to think of someone still around in my life that could measure up to being one of those true characters. So to speak.

Many of us grew up around those types in our family or friends of the family. And they helped shape who we are today. But is that something that is being lost to history? Something that society will never create again because our "improved" lifestyle no longer molds people into those kind of characters? Are they on the endangered species list?

Sadly, I think so.

People hunting to survive instead of recreation. Living of the land. Depression times. No electricity. World Wars. Rations. Moonshine stills. Staying "almost" on the right side of the law.

Cultures and traditions that have fast become nothing but our memories.

So anybody got a story handed down from one of your "characters" that they told you about that stuck in your mind? One of those stories that you doubt could ever happen again nowadays?

I know a bunch of true characters. Eccentricity will never disappear. In fact, I think society is more accepting of eccentrics than it used to be.

My Dad was hunting rabbits from the back of an old station wagon, running down the road with his buddies. He had that old 12 ga db I spoke of in the Grandpa's gun thread. Both barrels fired and knocked him off the back of it while they were moving at about 30 mph he said!

I know, I know....but still, you won't hear many stories like that anymore. \:\)

Again, my Grandma Hazel comes to mind. She had brother-in-law that she just hated. She always called him by his full name. He was a dirty old man whom all the women in my family avoided being left alone with. He would always be talking trash and making sexual comments. Once while I was visiting grandma, he and his wife came a callin'. During a lull in the conversation he blurted out "Helen and I have not had sexual intercourse in a year and six months!" Grandma took a deep breath like she was diving to the bottom of the ocean! I thought her head was going to explode! She was shaking all over. She gave that man a cussing like I had never heard because he said that in front of me. I was about ten years old at the time. I can still see that Raleigh perched on her lips flying up and down as she lambasted him. I reckon it never crossed her mind that she was laying down a blue streak of profanities in my presence! She ended up saying
"Harvey Kitts, you ain't nothin' but trash!" She ran him off and ranted about him the rest of the day.

My grandmother, aunt and dad moved out to Rutherford County in the 40's and ran a small dairy. They didn't allow hunting because my grandmother was afraid one of the cows would get shot.

As a kid, my aunt used to tell me stories and some were about having problems with "poachers" always on the back side of the farm. It was local guys that just took awhile to accept that they could no longer hunt on that land.

Years later when I was an adult, I ran into an OLD man at a local school ballgame. We were just small talking and eventually got around swapping our names. He asked me if I was related to "so and so". I told him "Yes sir that was my dad".

He said........."Well dang, growing up, I knowed your whole family when they first come here. Now your daddy's momma was Sadie wasn't she?"....

"Yes sir, that was my grandmother. She died back when I was 5."...

Him.........."Boy I tell you Ms. Sadie was a fine woman. I used to live back behind her farm. We used to rabbit and coon hunt on her place. She was a real fine lady."

Me......."So you hunted her farm?"

Him......."Oh yeah for a while.........You know she 'bout killed me with an 'ol .22 rifle when she caught me once! I don't know if she was trying to scare me or hit me! But them 'ol bullets was poppin' trees while I was running!......Real fine lady though"

You wouldn't think it was if you had been at my house Sat night. Talk about some stories.

No. They are still around. They just have to be PC. I'll probably get in trouble but I'll tell this one.

Last year I am in Kroger and a pro football player is in front of me in the checkout line. He is a very nice defensive lineman of about 6-8, 350 pounds.

An old man, maybe 90, with a walker and a quart of milk comes up to the line and in a shakey voice says, Dam that is one big n....
The football player about died laughing. He won my admiration right then. Now that old man is a character.

My mother was a true one. She would cut the cheese then slap me on top head scold me for doing it. Then she would die laughing.
