If you can get a copy of this month's AON, it has a great article and separate editorial on cougars in the Southeast, a topic more controversial than aliens, Bigfoot, and Elvis sightings combined. It is a very good article.

Florida Panther Killed On I-95

June 7, 2005
Looking for love in all the wrong places, a 6-foot-long, 120-pound male Florida panther was killed on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County June 3rd or 4th, 2005.
Mark Cunningham, a veterinarian with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said Monday that he had performed a necropsy on the animal and said it was probably hit by a vehicle and killed instantly. "Otherwise, he was healthy and in good condition, probably about 3 years old," Cunningham said. "He had a lot of good fat reserves."
Joy Hill of the Conservation Commission said experts have said the dead animal was indeed a Florida panther.
READ THIS PART.....Cunningham said the same thing -- a DNA test is required because there was an experiment in North Florida three years ago that involved releasing sterilized Texas cougars to find out if a second population of Florida panthers could survive there. Some of the vasectomies given to those cats were not effective and they began breeding, he said. "I couldn't tell the difference at necropsy," he said. "This one did not have some of the characteristics of the pure, inbred Florida panthers. I still think it was a Florida panther, but I don't want to rule out that this could be connected to that project."

P.S. THIS ARTICLE WAS 5 YEARS AGO! Which means the "breeding" TX cougars were released in N. FL 8 years ago!
How far do you think a population of breeding cougars could spread in 8 years? Given that a single male cougar may have a home range of 200 square miles!

No one doubts cougars near the Florida border. Most experts doubt a cougar population in TN, considering one has not been documented.

I lived in Flagler County Florida which is just south of ST Johns county before moving to Tennessee. I saw 1 panther chasing another panther across US1 back in 1990. At least I thought it was a panther. Ran like a cat not a dog. About the size of a German shepard and had long tail with slight curl upward. Was also running in long strides and incredibly fast. Looked like something of Wild Kingdom. Happened 20 years ago and is something I will never forget.

Seen 2 panthers this year while gator hunting in S. Fl Storm tx Area's. First time in 50 years.
