Don't have a "grandfather's gun" story. But, the first rifle my father bought me was a Winchester model 94 30-30. I killed my first deer with it. As a matter of fact, everything I ever shot at with it died. When I got older, I traded it for a 7mm mag. Kicked myself for 23 years for ever trading it. Felt so guilty about trading that model 94, I started collecting them about two years ago. I now own 5 of 'em. Anybody want to sell me another?

Both of my grandfathers were dead by the time I was born. So I have no connections to them. My dad used to take us fishing but he never hunted. So as a youth, I never learned to hunt and I have no fond memories of hunting from that time.
But a good friend of my dad's had this daughter....you see!
I first met her when I was around 15 and she was about 12 and a TOTAL nuisance and pain in the rear when they would come over to visit. But then....somewhere around the time she turned 17.............
You see where this is headed already don't you?
She became not near as much of a nuisance and a whole lot more pleasant to look at too! We started dating when she was 18 and her father took me deer hunting with him and her grandfather down at her grandfathers property. Her grandfather even let me use his Rem 30-06 pump, since I didn't even own a gun period.
He was a true character. One of those depression raised, country, hunting to survive, working in this uncle's whiskey still at age 5, WWII vets. He once confided that he only mastered 4 things in his long life.....shooting marbles, pitching horse shoes, hoboing freight trains and hunting everything that would put meat on the table.
One of those true down to earth men that is your absolute best friend or could have been your absolute worst enemy if you ever crossed him. But we never had a bad word between us. I always showed him the respect he deserved, like had been taught me by my parents, and he never showed me anything but the same, coupled with his humble generosity of "taking me under his wing" to pass on some of his life's experience.
Papa Jack and Granny both practically adopted me from the beginning and I sooned learned what it felt like to have grandparents. They both had a way of just making me feel like I had always belonged. Before long, Kim and I got married and it was offical.
The first time she and I went in to see her grandparents, after we were marrried, her grandfather pulled me aside and gave me his 30-06 rifle, that I had been using, as a wedding present.
Don't you just love those "country wedding presents"?
The very first gun I ever owned. It had many years of wear and tear and hard hunting on it. But still performed every time. He seemed really tickled to have passed on to someone that would keep carrying it into the woods, since he was not able to as much as before.
I took the old "swing mount" 4x scope and base off of it and had it bead blasted and re-blued while I refinished the wood. I mounted a new 3x9 scope with see through rings on it, added new sling and swivels and reattached the refinished walnut. I took it back to him soon after and asked if he'd like to see the new gun I just bought?
He started looking at it and then realized it was the same well worn rifle that he had given me and almost busted with pride. I had to leave it with him that trip so he could show it off to all his friends over the next week or two. He was so proud that I cared enough about it, that I would spend my time and money to put it back into "like new" condition.
He knew then, that it had found a permanent home with the right person. And he was never more proud and excited, over the many following years, than when he'd see me coming off the mountain behind his house dragging a deer with "his" rifle slung over my shoulder.
Papa Jack, Granny, Paw Paw (my wife's dad) and then my wife, after 20 years marriage, have all since left this world. But I still have memories and a sweet 30-06!
I recently bought a new 30-06 700. So Papa Jack's gun has a long future ahead in the gun safe of his great-grandson. My 25 year old son Josh. My son was 12 when Papa Jack died, so he has many memories of his great-grandfather as well. He'll have those memories along with the added deer killed with it when he and I hunted together to add yet another generation to the old gun.
If I make it long enough, and lord willing get me some grandkids oneday, guess what I'll be taking my grandkids hunting with when they're old enough to handle it????

On a lighter note....
Back a few years ago, soon after my mom died my dad told me to come over there. I went and he gave me his Remington 1100 20 gauge and he also gave me his Belgium made Browning 22 Auto for man.
Neither look like they have ever been shot but I know they both have been. Only thing I ever saw my dad kill while hunting was a rabbit with the 1100.
My mom bought him the 22 in the early 50's or so I guess. Can't remember how much it was but it took her 5 months to pay for it.
Doubt either will ever be shot again and I know they will never leave mine and my sons possession.
