Deer Management 101:
You want to manage your deer? Step one is answer these questions: 1 What is your deer population? 2 What is the concentration? 3-What is the sex ratio? 4 What is the age strata? 5- What and where are the food locations? 6 What is the economic impact on your location? 7 What is the environmental impact on your location.
Step two is to answer these questions:
1- What are your goals. 2- Can you use sound data to support those goals? 3- What will be the environmental impact of those goals? 4- What will be the economic impact of those goals? 5- How will you economically support those goals? 6- What portion of your budget will be dedicated to attaining those goals?
Step Three: 1 How do I implement my goals? 2 What labor will it take? 3 How do I pay for that labor? 4 Is what I want realistic? 5 Keep in mind, they aren’t your deer.
And the most important question of all.
Am I managing for herd health or am I managing to satisfy my antler addiction? If it is the latter, please stay the heck away from me because if you don’t understand a healthy deer herd will produce large antlers, you have no business managing a deer herd.
If you can’t answer the questions in step one, go no further.

Certainly. How much income does hunting bring in to your area? What will be the impact for any changes you make? Keep in mind, you don't own those deer. You change things, what will that do to gas stations or cafes and motels?
You might think a 1:1 buck:doe ratio will stimulate hunting activity. You are dead wrong. You have to look at all apsects, not just age and antlers. You can do that on your property but you can't do it county wide.
Lot more to this management business than most people ever consider. Anytime you consider wildlife management, you must consider three things. Impact on the wildlife, impact on the ecosystem and impact on the economy. Most people never consider two of those.

Very true when trying to manage large areas. But for the guy trying to manage his little 50 acres, he's only going to be able to have a small impact on the first one and almost no impact on the second and third.

BSK, I have to disagree about number three. I have over 33k in reciepts from last year alone. I promise I have an impact on the local economy.

Which would also bring into play a fourth factor imo, the social impact. It pertains to the overall general attitude towards the hunting sector by the surrounding, and often non hunting, community.

HA! Good point! During management, you can definitely add the coffers of the local Coop, the local bulldozer guy, the loggers in the area, etc.
I guess my point was you can't harm the local economy much by managing 50 acres.
