Wondering if anyone has something new they will try this season. Maybe something that you read about or observed in the past.
I like hunting ridges. BSK shared cool topo and pointed out how bucks like using secondary points as travel routes. Sure gonna focus on them for a spell this year see what happens.

LOL I woke up the past season with the only buck I would have shot underneath me...by the time I cleared my head wiped the sleep from my eyes and decided I should be drawing back it was too late he winded a hot doe in the holler below us and took off at a trot. Seems like the older I get the harder it is to stay awake? Good luck with that one Rowdy.

I'm going to have to learn how to hunt clear cuts since, that's what our lease will be by the time season opens.

Ill probably take more does with a bow since I bought more property in an area that has alot of deer, been just letting them walk on my low density property. I would also like to try taking a kid hunting now that Im 21 and have property where they could actually see deer easily.

RG RNR I tried to search for the post that you were talking about BSK posting, do you know where I could find it, that sounds very interesting.

I'm just going to continue with what I started last year, and that's using camp fire smoke as a cover scent. Actually, I use the scent smoker to really get my clothes smelling like smoke. I haven't seen enough evidence to fully convince me, but I've seen some positive results.

I hope this is a joke?

No its not a joke.Do a little reading on it.Smoke kills bacteria and covers up human scent.I know some people who will change clothes around the fire because they are afraid deer will smell it on them.lol

I remember that thread TN RDG...been using some of the info to structure my scouting this off season. Im gonna focus on hunting with the wind better and finding shelfs on the sides of hills to hunt for bucks. I kill pleanty of deer but Im going to start trying to refine for more and older buck sightings.
Also, Ive decided that Im only hunting my property one time before mid Oct Muzzleloader season (the weekend I plant my plots). We really dont see deer until acorns are dropping and crops are out in the bottom so Im going to keep them as comfortable as possible.

Smoke is a fine cover scent. Always has been. I believe I have read somewhere that the Indians(Native Americans to be politically correct) used smoke to cover their scent. Smoke from a campfire I would think would work but tobacco smoke would send the signal of human presence.

You can not over-power a deer's ability to smell human. In essence, "cover" scents do not work.
However, there are a few products than can help break up human scent.

I've been taking kids hunting since I owned property Steven. Some of them are grown now and still hunt and fish...One is a regular at my deer camp. If their parents wouldn't buy them a bow I'd put them to work on the farm here so they could earn the money to get one. I always talked to the parent first or on many occasions the parent/s would call me to take them to buy a gun. A very rewarding thing...good for you.
This year I'm going to bowhunt higher up on the mountain and not just hunt the field edges. Not every day but at least give it a try.

IME, I've hunted with a fire burning just adjacent from our property before, smoke blowing from the fire to where I was hunting. The deer were moving away from the smoke.

I'm going to keep my pre season scouting, feeding and checking cameras to a minimum.Try to do this just before it rains to wash away my scent.

Smoke is a fine cover scent. Always has been. No such thing as a "cover" scent! But smoke does kill and inhibit bacteria growth! Smoking meat is not just to add flavor, was originally used to kill and inhibit bacteria growth long before we had a big side by side frig or chest freezer! lol Much debate has been had on this subject over the years with very mixed results and opinions on how/if it actually works/helps while hunting. I personally cant stand to have the smoke smell on my clothes and hair for long periods of time, makes me about sick!
