I secure my harness then unpack my heavier coat and put it on in the colder weather.
Just remember to WEAR the harness and ALWAYS secure it before trying to do anything else when you get to the height you want.
Duck gave some great advice about locating the strap high above your head, however, it also appears he is suggesting to secure the strap to the tree ONCE you get to your desired hunting height.
This is a common mistake, to climb the tree and THEN secure the harness. From the literature I have read, at least 1/2 our falls happen while climbing or descending. Therefore, we must put the strap around the tree as soon as we step onto the stand and slide it up as we climb.
A couple of weeks ago, I was training a young boy how to safely hunt from a tree. When teaching him to attach his tree strap from the moment he leaves the ground until he returns to the ground, he said: "Isn't that a little inconvenient?"
I told him "Inconvenient" is sipping all his food through a straw for the rest of his life, "Inconvenient" is having his Mom change his diaper 5 times a day forever, "Inconvenient" is trying to find a girlfriend/wife while confined to a wheelchair, "Inconvenient" is never playing Basketball, ever!
He got the point. His Dad and Mom smiled approvingly!

I use a Loggy Bayou "transformer System" which is lighter and cooler than the vests. I've tried several and like this one the best, especially when bow hunting warm weather. It also has the Bino system hooks built in, which eliminates another item you dont have to wear. Attaching the system at the base of the tree and sliding it up as you go is by far the safest way to fly, as like stated above, many falls occur when ascending and descending the tree. I just taught my oldest son to use a climber last Fall and his instructions were, If I ever catch you more than 3 ft off the ground without your harness connected you will have a much greater problem with me when you get down!

Just use common sense! When climbing be strapped up and when descending be strapped in and of course be strapped in while hunting!

I use the harness that came with my Summit Viper. I put it on at the truck and wear it while walking in (dressed as lightly as the temperature allows). When I add layers before or after climbing, I just put them on over the harness and run the attachment strap through the neck hole of my coveralls or jacket. The only problem that causes is that you can't wear a hood, but I don't do that anyway because I can't hear well with one on.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking already about Duck's suggestion before he mentioned it, just didn't know if it would work. What is the most affordable, yet effective, fall restraint recommended? HSS is the only way. I like the HSS the best. However, I have several of the basic harness types and would give you one if you could meet me somewhere.
I may take you up on that when I get a little more time in a week or two, and the offer is very much appreciated.

Just like Duck and Plinker said. And I do mine like Pursuit Hunter. I put it on at the truck before I ever start into the woods.
Even in the very coldest temps, I usually leave the truck with only long handles top and bottom (thinsulate), 1 layer of pants and maybe a t-shirt over the thermal top with the harness on over that. Everything else I put on at the tree over the harness, except my heavy insulated coveralls. I tie them around the front bar of the climber and sit on them as I go up.
After cooling down and when I start getting a little chill, I slip the coveralls on while up the tree and that leaves the harness strap out the back of the neck like eveybody else. I really prefer the coveralls for the top layer, instead of a coat, because they never pull open a gap in the back and sorta wrap over everything else like a sleeping bag to hold the heat in. And I can zip/unzip top side openings or the legs all the way up or down to adjust for level of warmth.
