I have never regularly used fall protection when hunting from a treestand, but have seen the errors of my ways and am wanting to start this fall, but...
I am a heavy sweater, and have always dressed light and carried my heavier outer layers in with me, then dressed after climbing into my treestand to avoid "overheating" and sweating. What do you guys do in this situation to avoid getting all sweaty since the harness and belt are worn on the way up, and outer clothing would interfere with the routing of this when put on at my final height?

Thanks and God Bless, Ryan

I bought a hunter safety system pro model. About $125 at Bass Pro. I fought with all types of straps and harnesses for years that were difficult to untangle and get on in the dark. The HSS is a vest that slips on easily and is comfortable. I wear it on the walk in and never leave the ground that i'm not already wearing it.

I wear my harness over my clothes. Put it on right before I start to climb...unzip and open everything I can and take my hat off before I climb. Still break a heavy sweat but I think it has to do with my time spent in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hopefully next year wont be as bad.

I try to wear the least amount of clothes possible even in very cold weather until I get to my tree. I sometimes wear my safety harness under my heavier clothes or over my heavy clothes like my coat. I usually put my harness on and just one layer until I get up the tree. I secure my harness then unpack my heavier coat and put it on in the colder weather. I put the strap around the tree up higher than my head or just at head level so the strap will come out the back of my coat. Try a few different ways and you'll find one that works best for you.

Just remember to WEAR the harness and ALWAYS secure it before trying to do anything else when you get to the height you want.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking already about Duck's suggestion before he mentioned it, just didn't know if it would work. What is the most affordable, yet effective, fall restraint recommended?

HSS is the only way.

I like the HSS the best. However, I have several of the basic harness types and would give you one if you could meet me somewhere.

For many years I used the Seat-of-the-Pants harness with the pouch in the back. The pouch keeps the harness from getting twisted up and makes it very quick and easy to put on.

After reading some info on blood flow issues if you fall out of your stand and can't get back in, I decided to try a HSS Pro that comes with a fal relief strap. I quickly fell in love with the new system. It is heavier than the SOP, but I really like the convenience of the pockets on the HSS vest.
