While turkey hunting this spring? So far, I have killed 3 birds, worked several, and had a GREAT season. But I have seen ZERO deer. ZERO sign, and heard ZERO!!!
It is like this EVERY Spring where I chase birds, and not much different in the Fall!!!
How picky do you think I will be when deer season gets here???

wished i had seen less.
ive had 2 different birds committed and had deer come in and mess them up.
I usually try to sit the call down till the deer are out of the picture, but it dont always work like planned when u got a hot bird and deer decide they wanna figure out whats wrong with your decoys.

I started shooting ANY and ALL legal deer possible. Because I choose to hunt with a bow, I figured back in 1981 when I started deer hunting, that I needed all the LEGAL practice on live targets I could get. Heck, even seeing a deer back then Let alone a buck, was almost IMPOSSIBLE. ANd then to try to kill that deer with a bow was CRAZY thinking.
But after killing a couple hundred deer, and several P/Y class bucks, I have come full circle.
I hunt and kill what makes me happy at THAT time.
I also believe, that after travelling all over several states, and COUNTIES, it is VERY difficult if not IMPOSSIBLE for MOST other hunters to understand where most of us, on this forum, are "coming from" when referring to our feelings on the subject of deer hunting.
THe reason I feel this to be evident is because it is VERY difficult for a resident of say Williamson County, Tn. to relate to why a resident of say Polk COunty, Tn. won't pass on an "immature" looking buck. THese may be two extremes but they do prove a point.
It is VERY easy to be choosy when there are LOTS of CHOICES!!!
Try going ALL deer sesaon KNOWING you will do VERY well to SEE, let alone get the chance to kill, 5 bucks...THE ENTIRE SEASON!!!

The entire topic takes a lot of "outside the box" thinking. If a hunter gets the opportunity to hunt outside of their Region, they'll find that it is IMPOSSIBLE to make blanket statements regarding what you'd do given this situation or that situation because it COMPLETELY depends on where you are hunting.
If I am hunting in a place that high HIGH deer density, and GREAT "trophy" potential, I pass on "sub" deer. If I am hunting a place that has few deer, I am not near as picky.
102
See what I mean!!! Imagine hunting all turkey season, or driving near your hunting grounds, and NEVER laying eyes on a deer. Imagine beginning a Fall season KNOWING you've seen little if ANY deer sign or movement for MONTHS, if not YEARS pryor to taking the stand. And then tell me that you are going to be picky when the time comes.
Not only do you have VERY few deer to see from your stand, IF ANY, but your shot ops. will be fewer still, for bucks.
It is easy to talk about limiting other hunters, when your fields are full of deer to chose from.

102 I made a vow to myself a few years ago,not to spend deer hunting time in un productive places,Ive worked, saved, planned and now,I only hunt I "good" areas. If people choose to limit themselves,so be it,BTW ,I hear all the time about the "big bucks" in ETN,so why not wait on em?Im glad I dont live or hunt in the deer desert you describe.

The point I am trying to get across is that deer/game populations can differ DRASTICALLY from county to county, even area to area. So it is VERY hard to make blanket statements about what a hunter should pass on when the hunters talking about these deer have no idea what the other hunter may be seeing.

A yearling in B (where i hunt) is the same as a yearling in L, they arent anymore woodswise just because there are fewer of them. They are still silly wherever your hunting. Shoot em if you want but dont kid yourself.
Shouldnt be a shortage of bucks anywhere since we have a statewide 3 buck limit.

Well TREE TRAMP,
You are wrong. All yearling bucks are not the same. Yes, they are probably less educated where most people hunt, but in some places, a yearling buck is VERY challenging to kill with a bow for MANY hunters.
And as far as yearlings go, who said anything about a yearling? I am primarily referring to a "sub-trophy" class deer. Where I spend considerable time, a basket racked 8 point, or a small spike might be 3.5 years old. And it may take ALL SEASON to just see it!!!
