Two of the biggest deer killed in recent years, a 190 inch 8 pt and a massive 13 pt that grossed 214 turned out to be poached. According to some reports, had they been legally killed, they would have been the largest 8 pt ever recorded by the Boone and Crockett Club and the largest typical buck killed during the 2009 - 2010 hunting season respectively.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Minnesota and Ohio wildlife officers, the two guys who thought they could cheat their way into the record books were caught and denied record book status.

Since catching cheaters is at least as challenging as legally tagging a trophy buck, I propose (with tongue planted firmly in my cheek) starting a scoring system to award points and record book status to the wildlife officers who catch and convict scumbags like Johnny Clay and Troy Reinke.

My new scoring system, which I'm calling the Leopold and Stoddard system would award points to WO's on the basis of the B&C score of the poached animal, the number of days jail time served, and the dollar amount of the fines assessed.

My complete rant, along with photos and links to the back stories is here http://www.pursuithunting.com/2010/04/broken-records.html

What do you guys think?

Apparently it had only 5 inches of deductions, mostly due to a kicker point. Awesome symmetry!

There was a very nice Illinois deer that was posted on here last fall that turned out to be illegal. The buck was killed before a buck tag was purchased. Fortunately, they emailed pictures back to buddies in TN to brag a little before they purchased their buck tag to "make it legal". One of your TN Wildlife Officers helped Illinois make the case. It is amazing what some folks will do for a few minutes of fame.

I am all for it. I think a reward for WO getting the job done would be great.

Piece of crap poachers should never have their name mentioned. Those bucks were incredibly magnificent animals that some scum bag poached!

Gurrrrrrr!!!

It would be biased at best. Leaving the punishment up to individual judges would lead to a wide array of punishments and non punishment imo. \:\( In other words, one case could end in a hefty fine and some jail time, while another of the same caliber might end in probation. I like the idea of rewarding the officers tho, very much. ;\)

You're right. That's why I only half-seriously proposed the idea. If there was a way to make it objective and unbiased, it would be a pretty cool thing to do though.
