I walked out onto my ground level deck this evening about 7:30. I looked up and all the sudden, there were six deer standing about 8 to 10 yards away just staring at me. It was funny, because of the look on their faces. It was as if they were saying, "what are you looking at"?
After about 10 seconds they started eating the clover and not paying me much attention at all. I even smoked a cigarette and took a pee right in front of them. No reaction. I figure I can get them used to my stange behavior before deer season!

They quickly learn "where they are safe" and where they are not safe, and will act accordingly. Now run into those same deer in an area they believe "is not safe" and they will act like wild, hunted deer.

Has there been any form of studies, showing why the deer remain calm until the later half of the year?
I've always wondered but never actually heard a good answer.
