I am going on 58 years old, but I didn't go on my first deer
hunt until I was 14. I did go with my dad and brother when I was
13, but I was on crutches with a hip condition and couldn't hunt.
I still wanted to go and be with them, so I sat in the truck for
several hours hoping to hear a gun shot from them. I never heard
a shot, but when they got back to the truck, my dad had cut down
a small pine sapling to show me what a rub looked like in real
life.

I will NEVER forget that. From then on, all I wanted to do was
kill a buck deer that had antlers, no matter how BIG they might
be. I did that for many years and 80% of them were 1.5 roaming
bucks. After several years, I thought this is just too easy, the
young bucks don't even know what they are doing. Biologically,
they had been run off by their mothers and feeling their oats.

Mags, media, deer hunting personalites, or any video or TV show,
has nt influenced my current choice. This is because after years
of experience........you learn what's real...and what ain't.

many hunters are also athletes that have grown up competing.

it's in their blood.

whether it's horseshoes or hunting, many people like to win and strive to do so. If they think that "winning" is killing their biggest buck to date and nothing less will accomplish that, then good for them for not varying from their goals.

it takes a much more focused and disciplined hunter to watch a 100 inch eight pointer walk off after waiting all season for a shot.

shooting the first legal deer that you see is (JMO) like saying...."yes! there's a deer, now i can get out of here."......

just like people want better things , expecially later in life, so do some hunters. I'll never drag out another 'less than " 100 inch buck , most times nothing less than 120, unless I miss judge him.....

even as I type this I am looking at my wall and thinking that since I have a 148 on there and quite a few deer 100-120, I may even increase my goals abit........just for me, not for anyone else.

I've never put much stock in what others think of me. First off, they have no right, secondly they don't know me that well and lastly, why should I care?

kill what you want, I'll do the same.........each season, I feel like I will kill my biggest buck to date... and I'm not gonna give up on that just to fill a tag or prove myself as a hunter......if I sit until dark on the last day and never fire a shot all season, then I'll just be more amped up for next year, because it's not all about the shot....to me, killing is my least favorite part of hunting.......JMO.

I am 41 yrs old. I have hunted since I was probaly 18. My first time out was bow hunting at Catoosa. I got one the first time. I was hooked every since. This past hunting season, my son started hunting ,he is 8 yrs old. I spent most of the time in the woods taking him. I have hunted south Texas, South dakota, and several places here in Tennessee. Have killed a few good deer. But nothing is as rememberable as my son taking his first deer. it was a doe,and through out the season he ended up taking 4 total, all does. I loved every minute of that. Although he did want a buck,he didn't get upset with what he did get,to him it didn't matter. We eat 4 deer a year at my house so he took care of our needs. I ended up with 2 does and a buck myself. We gave 3 of the 7 deer away to people who didn't hunt ,but like to eat it.So to me the I think ,if you want to shoot it ,that do it.My son enjoys deer hunting,so I am not going to tell him what he should shoot,Except we will not shoot yearlings, even he said he want shoot a baby. I pass up deer, and wait on bigger ones at times, but at times I don't. I figure I will teach my son the basics of hunting, he will have the freedom to choose what he wants to shoot. As far as the media, and tv shows about deer hunting, most of them are all a joke to me. they don't influence me at all.

In defense of "selectiveness"...there are alot more deer now than back then. Once you were lucky to get a deer; any deer. Now it's common place to expect to see deer almost any time you step into the woods. You can afford to pass a few young or small deer waiting on another one.

When I started hunting way back when, (I'll be 53 this July) I can count on one hand how many deer I saw while actually hunting. This went on for several years. There just wasn't any deer to amount to anything. When I started hunting in middle Tn. then things changed. We didn't worry about how big a deer was we just shot them and took them home and was happy about it. I still love to hunt and if I kill a deer these days it's just a bonus. If I wanted to limit out I would. I could care less about what someone thought about it. I just choose not to. TWRA tells us what we can bag and I believe in them so if you want em get em. If not then that's ok too.
