Why I have gotten no..I mean ZERO pics of any bucks on my cam since mid Dec?? Same woods, pretty much same locations. I'm pretty sure that 3 different 7 pointers made it, several different spikes..but no pics or sheds or evidence of them since then?? It's puzzled my mind. As far as tracks go, yeah I've still been coming across good mature buck tracks but that's it.

I know they have pattern changes but the way this land lays out, they don't have very far they can go without crossing the lake or several major highways and not many places to go even if they did cross the highways.

I mean they seemed to be very 'local' deer all last year. Got regular pics of them all the time.

I would assume they relocated to find food, once things green up they should return, if you have food for them during the summer. It isn't uncommon for deer to move their home ranges during late winter and early spring to find food, this is the end of the worst time of the year for wildlife.

1) It's hard to identify bucks as bucks once they've dropped their antlers; and 2) I'm convinced deer--especially bucks--shift their ranges seasonally much farther than originally assumed.

I guess i'm an idiot, but I just always 'assumed' that a good size or larger set of buck tracks went with being mature?

i agree

Any pics I have gotten since then, have not revealed the 'areas' on their head where the antlers have dropped, which are usually visible in my past pics.

deer are like most all other critters. some will have bigger hooves than others. the biggest hooves i ever saw on a deer were on a 3 1/2 yr. old doe i killed in hickman co. the only way to differentiate doe and buck tracks is to see the deer standing in them.

Not really. I have seen the idea of "hoof size" as an indicator of age tested and found not to be accurate. Hoof size varies greatly.

Yes, the antler pedicles should be visible in a clear photograph.

Its so hard to identify any deer this time of year especailly because the bucks pretty much have lost their antlers.
