When I started, the limit was one antlered deer.

Seeing deer was not an everyday event.

If you got a shot, you took it, most times.

Now, deer are much more abundant and thusly we CAN be more selective.......

In my case, it's like burgers or steak......I've had so many burgers in my day, eating one is not that special. I really like burgers, but I'd rather eat one steak once a week than burgers every day.

Plus, for the last ten years or so, I decided that I wanted to change as a hunter and be more selective. Since I never eat antlered deer and only need one or two does per year to eat, then why would I shoot a small eight pointer. Why would I take a deer out of the herd that I don't necessarily want to take? I don't have to prove my skills to anyone and to be perfectly honest about it, the last time that I DID shoot a deer that I didn't really want , I was sick about it for weeks.

To answer your question though, NO , no one has ever told me what to shoot or convinced me to shoot something or taught me anything about deer hunting.

I have always shot what I wanted to shoot, and still do today.

I would assume satisfication with today's hunting would come down to a hunter's personal goals. If just hunting and taking whatever comes by is the goal, all the focus on big bucks and the controversies that produces must be a serious irritant.

Everybody is different. Some people are perfectly happy maintaining the same goals. Acheiving that goal repeatedly is completely satisfying. Other people, once a goal is acheived, need to "raise the bar" and set a higher goal to feel the same level of satisfaction.

I'm that type of person. No one taught me to focus on antlers or older bucks. I taught myself that. With each goal acheived, I raised the bar to a higher (or at least different) goal. I went from a goal of finding an area to hunt where deer sightings and harvest opportunites were more numerous, to killing a deer every year, to killing a buck every year, to killing deer with unique weapons, to increasing my opportunites to kill bigger/older bucks, to killing a "trophy" buck, to the realistic opportunity of killing a mature buck every year. I've acheived all those goals. Who knows what my next goal will be, but I'm enjoying hunting more than ever.

I'm 57,started deer hunting in 1968,could have been 67 cannt remember.I do remember it was the first year Sumner co opened for hunting.I took a 6 pointer with 45lb recurve,Ben Pearson. My brother took an 11 pointer on same property that year.We were lucky we had access to property where they first released deer in Sumner co.Big game license was $15 bucks if i remember correctly. It included 1 buck,1 bear, and 1 boar.
Had no one to teach us how to hunt, just climbed a tree and sat on a limb.Next day we put 2x4s across 2 limbs, much better.Antlers was the only deer you could take.
My brother, my hunting partner, drowned the next year on the Obed river while canoeing.I lost my best friend.
Compound bow came out in the early 70s.I was reluctant to let my recurve go.Killed a deer every year and diddnt see any reason to use this thing with wheels and cables. Finally broke down and bought a Carrol 850 from Hunts Sporting Goods in Hendersonville.Hunts and Clays Sporting Goods in Nashville were the only shops in middle Tn then.Went 3 years without killing a deer and was dissapointed in my new bow.
Back to antlers.I have been lucky to have taken many bucks in over 40 years of hunting.I have taken bucks from Cheatam WMA Catossa, middle Tn,west Tn, Kentucky,Ft.Campbell and Canada.About 10 years ago i became a trophy hunter. All i thought about was big bucks and how to kill them. After about 5-6 years of this i discovered i was putting in alot of time and work and was not happy. It just wasnt fun hunting all day in September and October. It just wasnt fun hunting in the rain or heat.
A few years ago i changed the way i deer hunt. Now all i want to do is have fun.If its not fun i'm going to the house.I still look for trophy bucks but if one looks good i take him.
I am blessed with good hunting property in Kentucky and am always looking for someone to take.My best hunt in years was last year.Sitting about 15ft up in different tree watching 15 year old shoot a doe in a corn field. We hunted all day for that 80lb trophy.Ill remember that way after buck kills are forgotten.

What i'm getting at is go for the fun of it.Take a friend hunting. If a monster walks by take him.If a spike comes by and looks good to you take him.My friends know i hunt for big bucks and when they go with me i tell the "take what ever makes you happy"

Good luck everybody and have fun, life is to short.

IMO, it is a choice I don’t think it has anything to do with the changing times, if you want to pass smaller bucks, and wait for what you consider a trophy or kill the first deer you see or kill the limit. No wrong in any of those that’s your choice. I won’t press my child into only killing big bucks, but do hope that eventually will strive to raise the bar. When I first started deer hunting at age 9 my father instilled in me the same, and kill only what you can use. I started bow hunting at around 14, and by choice hunting what I considered a trophy, I am 32 now and have only killed maybe 12 or so bucks since I started hunting and 6 of these being p&y bucks. I have went without killing any bucks multiple years, just my choice. I don’t believe killing younger bucks is wrong by any means, I just don’t get the same amount of pleasure out of it, and has nothing to do with the tv shows , mags ect, its just big ol’ mature buck are not easy to kill, I get a thrill out of being successful.

i'm 32, been hunting 22yrs and even at 10yrs old i was addicted to antlers, my dad did not make me this way and at that time he had only killed 8 bucks (all small).

i told my dad the night before my first hunt that i was only going to shoot a buck (any buck). he said well you might not get that chance but it's up to you.

i got my chance opening day of juvy just after daybreak. it was a 4 pt and i will never forget dad saying how lucky i was since deer sightings in the late 80's were still low here and buck kills of any size were special

i've killed at least 1 buck every year for 22yrs and after killing 20+ small ones it was time for me to raise my goals and with deer sightings going through the roof (compared to what it was) it just made sense to me

it was the mid 90's when we started seeing more deer and it's done nothing but improve since. other than just being addicted to antlers i'd say deer sightings going through the roof is what really changed my mindset from any buck to mature buck

I don't feed into all the hype of waiting on a mature buck. I hunt on public land mostly, and if I let it walk then the guy over the next hill shoots it. I think all these TV shows can put unrealistic goals into peoples minds. I don't even hunt a large enough piece of property to hold mature bucks. So I will kill whatever I want. All the talk of letting bucks walk depends on where you hunt. JM2C

I started in 1987 at the age of 10 and I was never told to shoot anything in particular, I could shoot what I wanted and did shoot everything that was legal.

In my late teens to very early 20's I went through the stage of trying so see how many I could kill each year legally and killed plenty. When I killed my 100th in 2003 I remember wondering man how many could I possibly kill in my lifetime ?

At about the same time I started wanting quality more than quantity. I had killed some nice bucks in the past, but no monsters by any means. I just didn't see the point in continuing to shoot small bucks and cutting the horns off and throwing em in a pile with the rest of em. It just didn't get me excited like it use to so I knew something needed to change.

So around 2000 I changed my mindset from having to kill a buck to waiting on a particular size buck even if it meant not killing one that year. I changed the way I hunted, but mainly changed the areas I hunted. Since this change I've killed a lot less deer, but much bigger, and I know 1 year I didn't kill a buck at all. I've killed 5 bucks over 140 " during this time.

Now I'll shoot a doe or two for meat, but won't shoot a buck unless he is the size I want to shoot. I pass plenty of bucks each year and may go home without killing one, but its totally my choice and not anything I was tought. I don't have to kill to be happy I just enjoy playing the game.

I had plenty of deer to choose from growing up, in fact we had way too many deer. Seeing deer was not an issue, and certainly not excuse for us.

When I started hunting, I had no one to teach me anything. I took my rifle out in the woods and for the most part, watched the squirrels while I waited for luck to bring me a deer, any deer. I was ecstatic when, after about three years of that, I finally killed an antlerless buck (it had already shed its antlers by late December).

Then as now, the attraction of hunting was more about the process of hunting than the end result of killing something. Time spent as a participant in the natural order of things. Learning the ways of deer. Getting better at the game. All those things were, and still are, way more important than actually filling a tag.

What has changed for me is that as I've acquired some experience and knowledge (and as the deer population has improved) killing deer is no longer all that difficult. If I killed the first three bucks that I could, my season would be over way too soon. I'd miss out on the opportunity to spend time enjoying the things that originally interested me about hunting. Waiting for something bigger simply keeps the level of challenge where I want it and prolongs the end of my season.
