Around Chaney and most any other camps, the first question that comes out is either..."How big was he?" OR "Did you see anything?" OR "Did you get the limit?"..."How many?"...etc. and the last thing that's asked is..."Well, did you have a good time?"
Is it just me or have we forgotten what's really important?
Just food for thought......

On our lease the last question is never asked because everyone always does. If we weren't, at least the guys on the lease, nobody would be there. Heck, we have a good time "shooting the breeze" before we head out each morning. Seems like it's built in, we go hunting/fishing because "it is a good time".

Well I guess I'd never fit in around there, or in any of them other camps, cause I DO go for the GOOD TIMES.

No BH, it is not just you. The joy of sharing a campfire or even a camp stove is becoming a lost joy.
And I hate it.
We are having a reuinion in few weeks and I may be the youngest one there. We are not fshong or hunting or doing anything but remembering. The great thing about it is, none of us can remember anything so we lie as much as we want.
Killing something never meant a great deal to me. Seems like I was always able to do it. Got paid for it many years but killing a big deer never meant much. All the big deer I have killed are in other people's houses or lodges. Just never were important to me.
But the stories told and the friendships made around fires and campstoves. That's what counted. Any idiot, on any given day can kill a monster deer.
So what?

BH,
You are so right....sad but true...Like Bowriter, I've had some of the greatest hunts just listening to the stories around the campfire while elk hunting or deer hunting...To me anymore it's the hunt not the harvest...the time we share and the memories for a life time...that's my harvest...

I agree with jb3 here,
When I go hunting with all my buddies, mostly during duck hunting, we always have fun. I don't know how many times I have sat in a blind and not killed but 3 ducks. If we didn't enjoy it or have fun then we wouldn't go hunting or fishing. I have a blast no matter what happens that is the main reason why I go hunting. But I do see your concern it does seem like today the happyness that goes along with hunting and fishing has shifted toward whether we are successful or not.

Have fun and enjoy the hunt and life while you can and save the memories.

BH,
You are so right....sad but true...Like Bowriter, I've had some of the greatest hunts just listening to the stories around the campfire while elk hunting or deer hunting...To me anymore it's the hunt not the harvest...the time we share and the memories for a life time...that's my harvest...
i have found that MOST hunters WANT to tell the story and those that don't either aren't proud of it or they can't see the forest for the trees (so to speak). I LOVE a good story, period. To me, the journey is the actual fun part and sharing that is sometimes just as much fun......
It takes me just a few minutes to tell if someone I am telling a story to really cares about what happened or not. Some just ask what it scored, where and when and could not care any less about the events leading up to the actual shot. Maybe it's because I like details and telling people what I thought and how I planned the hunt and every little detail.......people that actually LOVE deer hunting and put forth the same effort as I do really want to hear the details, others usually don't really care.
I feel somewhat sorry for the people that just skip the details because ,IMO, they are missing out on so much of what deer hunting is all about. I also feel sorry for people that may have killed a really great deer and don't have a great story to tell.....for whatever reason.
To me , my stories and my memories that may be passed down to younger hunters and maybe family members will last far longer than a mount or a picture or any accollades that I or others place upon the kill itself.....and they are worth so much more.
BH

I enjoy everything about hunting. The questions you talk about are good questions and I enjoy talking to other hunters about them.
