Outdoors With John L. Sloan 3-31-10 Copyright 3-2010 Twister Toms of AL.
The night before opening day Eddie Salter and I roosted two gobblers.
That night tornadoes came spinning from the west and tore the heck out of Alabama. We stood on the patio of a hunting camp Eddie had broken into and watched them come. It was just getting daylight and I made an executive decision. I was not going turkey hunting with tornados throwing trees over the top of the camp.
But we went the next morning.
It was a beautiful morning…except for three inches of water standing in the bottom we wanted to hunt. Eddie apparently does not consider water a problem and he promptly sat down in it. I considered it and figured if Eddie could sit in water, so could I. So I found some tree roots that were dry and sat down. I asked Eddie why he was sitting in water. He said, “Hemorrhoids.” Made sense to me. I asked him if he wanted to sit on one of my tree roots. He just looked at me.
He owls and I crow call. Two, maybe three birds gobble. We point in different directions. Then a thought comes to me. How you going to get a turkey to wade in three inches of water? I voice this to Eddie and he points toward a strip of dry land, 25 yards in front of us. He says, “The problem is the bird is behind us.”
So I shot the gobbler 25 yards in front of me and said, “Not all of them.” Then the second bird gobbled and Eddie, he said, “Give me that gun.” I give it to him and he clucks and I yelp and the gun goes off and he says, “Breakfast time. You got any Tucks?”
Back at camp Gary Clancy comes in from Minnesota. I’m frying turkey breasts with eggs. Gary is a top outdoor writer and a good friend. He shakes the sugar holder and a few bugs run out. Gary looks up at me I just grin and say Salter camp. Gary drinks his coffee black.
Then in comes Eddie’s brother Dewan. His name is supposed to be Dewayne or Duane but it got misspelled in the hospital. He is extremely vocal. I have known him to say as many as six words a day. He is also a great turkey hunter and does not fall out of trees as much as Eddie. We agree to hunt together the next morning. Clancy shoos some of the roaches off the table and does some kind of funny dance when one goes down his pants.
So comes the dawn. I believe it was Easter Sunday. In AL they don’t always celebrate it on the same day down there. I recall the smell of the honeysuckle and the wisteria. Dewan and I are on the lip of a small ridge and a gobbler is firing off every few seconds.
He periscopes up, the gobbler, and I am dead on him. He takes two more steps and sticks his head up higher and I dust him. When I do, a second bird gobbles. Dewan says give me that gun. I hand it to him but in the hurry, I forget to jack another shell into the gun.
The bird steps right into the open. Click! Quiet mumbling. Click! Quiet mumbling. Click. I should point out back then I shot an old Winchester Model 97. This is a pump gun with a hammer.
Dewan looks at me and says, “I’ll loan you the money to buy a real gun.” About then we hear a shot in the distance and Dewan says, “Clancy just killed.” Then we hear another shot. He says, “Maybe not.” Then we hear another shot. He says, “Must be Eddie shooting.” Then we hear another shot. He says, “Maybe they are shooting at each other.” Then we look up and see this gobbler at 15 yards. I say quietly, “Jack the pump and shoot that gobbler.” Boom! We have two birds on the ground. We killed for longbeards that morning. Kinda fun. Good luck this weekend folks. Hunt safe and send me a picture. ###
Cutline:
#1-The old 97 worked well on this bird after the tornados. Salter was sitting in the water, #2- Pretty Nice Easter morning. We killed four birds that morning.

Not to change the subject, but if you want the best day of fishing you can imagine, fish on a day when tornadoes are forecast.

Coach I was bass fishing the day That hurricane whose name I can't remember hit New Orleans. Tornadoes were tearing through AL and we caught one every cast and they ran from 3-10 pounds. We were throwing Gitzits.
It finally got so bad we had to go sit in the truck and drink beer.
