I read this article by Mark Kayer in a Mag. of North American Hunter. I know this is a surprise since on one occasion a memeber told me I must not read. This article reminded me of several post that I have read on TN Deer in the past. He starts out talking about television shows, Internet, and even Magazines that we read can often be mis-leading in the world of white-tail deer. He states that it is human nature to show the "best of the best" so regardless of the media source, the owners of these domains want to lure you in with the biggest white-tails possible. He even mentioned, how many TV shows would you watch if they were killing spikes and does.

Without considering the facts he states that hunters believe with a enough hard hunting and a little luck, a giant will eventually walk in front of them to make their dreams come true. He states that he wish it were that simple, but if you set your sights too high, you might be setting yourself up for not only a disappointing season, but also a lackluster whitetail career.

He talked about instead of hunting for a deer you have a realistic chance of encountering, you might be hunting for the proverbial needle in the haystack-deer that simply can't be found in the your zip code. He goes on to talk about hunters should look at the bucks being checked in and the bucks that your fellow hunters have killed around you.... This article goes on but I just hit a few high points

Very interesting suff.... ;\)

The guy that wrote that must hunt in this state! \:D

Aim high, Hit High, Aim Low, you just shoot in the dirt. Not much is ever achieved with low expectations!

I try not to shoot any buck unless it's going to be mounted. That's my personal goal. Last year I didn't kill anything for the wall and I'm ok with that. In a state that supposedly harvest more mature bucks than most states, I'd say setting the sights too high shouldn't be a problem.

I have no EXPECTATIONS that I don't expect can come true. there have been 180s and above taken in my area and there are more out there, IMO.

I won't pass a 130, but if passing a 100-120 will help me maybe get a 160 plus, then that's what i expect to happen, eventually.

i don't believe that 180 deer are so rare that they are impossible to kill.......I have no doubt that deer of that size inhabit Chaney or nearby and may indeed come through there during the rut. If so, I'll try to be there when he makes his move.

Another farm that i hunt has a very large, dense cutover woods on it that could very easily hold a very mature monster. Going in there to kill him is probably impossible, but waiting on him to mess up is not impossible.....

Nothing is impossible, IMO.

Unrealistic expectations is the biggest problem currently plaguing deer hunting and deer management.

No. I've killed a deer every year but one for the last 30 years.

I figure if my sights where to high I would be shooting over them. \:D \:D \:D
