Not me. Your "mistake" is about the size of my biggest to date. Plus, I've never really used a trail camera so I never have shot a deer that I'd seen before unless I just happened to not get a shot on it the first time it passed by me.

Well, it gives you something to look forward to this season! Looks like you still shot a pretty good buck. I spent a whole season chasing one buck, never got him but had a great time doing it. I don't have any trail cams, have others who hunt the area during other seasons.

It has or will happen to anybody that hunts enough! I too have messed up and shot a couple 2 1/2 yr olds by mistake. I dont try to inventory my bucks to the point of identifying them on the fly when a fast paced encounter presents itself. I handle each encounter as if I have never saw the buck before. I judge him on the hoof and decide if he is a shooter or not right then. I have found that if you try to id bucks by a picture from months earlier, its too easy to make these type mistakes, and things change also, like broken main beams,major tines broken, etc. the main thing here is to not bash others for killing young/small bucks, as it can come back to haunt you! Right Wes??

When I screw up (and it's happened twice in the past 6 years, more than I'd like...) I'm so disappointed that I don't even take pics of the deer or even cut the rack off.
There is nothing worse than walking up on a deer you thought was 4.5 and it turns out to be 2.5... except for wounding and losing a deer.

Most of my "mistakes" aren't really mistakes, but a problem of getting too wound up about trying to kill a specific age/size of buck. If the season has not gone well (haven't killed anything), in the last few days of my primary hunting period (rut hunt) I tend to get frustrated and take a lesser/younger buck than I had planned on taking.
I used to beat myself up over these "mistakes," but over time I've just come to realize that that's just the way I am and not to worry about it. I'm not trying to impress anyone and it does no harm to our overall management. In fact, enjoying the hunting season is a more important goal, and for me, killing a "decent" buck is part of an enjoyable hunting season.

i've done it
this past season the third buck i shot was 2.5 and i had never seen him before
when i got in the stand (45 min before daybreak) i had just got settled in when i started hearing deer running around and i knew it was a buck chasing a doe so i sat there wishing it would hurry up and get daylight before they got gone, the more i sat there the more excited i got to point i could not stand it
long story short got daylight here they come running as fast as i had ever seen a buck chase a doe so i started grunt with my mouth to get them to stop the doe kept going he slowed down just enough for me to get shot off and has soon as i pulled the trigger i knew i screwed up, deer dropped and i didn't even want to get down to go see him, sat there awile then it was time to face up to it
2.5 yo 8pt good rack but young buck

I killed a 115 inch 2 1/2 year old 9 point during last light! I about puked when i walked up on him, he had soo much potential, he already had 21 inch mainbeams, 9 inch g2's and 15-16 inch spread!!! I was sick to say the least! That is the only time ive screwed up so far.

The only times I've "misidentified" a buck was when the buck was mature and I knew he was a "shooter" the instant I saw his chest/neck. Once I've made that "shooter" determination, I turn off my mind's ability to "see" the buck's antlers. I find I get too shook up if I focus on large antlers, so I just tell my brain not to see them. The best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) example I've had of misidentifying a buck was a couple of years ago. I knew we had a "good" 8-pointer that was using the property regularly and I was very focused on killing him. The second afternoon of the 1st MZ season I heard a heavy-bodied deer walking up a point behind my stand, and rolling around slowly to look over my shoulder I saw a lot of neck, a lot of chest, and a lot of antler! Immediately I turned off my view of the antlers and just concentrated on making the shot as the buck walked by me at 20 yards.
After the shot I was absolutely positive I had just shot the big 8-pointer. In fact, I got on the radio and told all my hunting partners I had just killed him. Here's who I thought I had shot:
Imagine my surprise when I walked up on what I had really killed!:
I don't know how I could mistake a monster 13-pointer for a 125-130 class 8-pointer, especially at point-blank range, but I did!
