1995 F-150, 4.9L straight 6, standard, hydraulic clutch master cylinder

Me thinks it be a clutch (and slave cylinder while we're there) but..........you tell me!

Here' what it does,

When the engine is NOT running it will work through all gears with no problem. When the engine IS running it won't go into gear or come out of gear. The clutch is very weak/soft pedal. There's fluid in the cylinder on the fire wall.

I had to put it in gear first, then push in clutch and start in order to drive it. Same with putting it in reverse. Start it in gear. But even then (1st, 2nd or reverse) the clutch won't take it completely out of gear. It will roll when it cranks and fires up. Sometimes definitely strong in gear, othertimes not very myuch at all. Then let off the clutch and go.

I'm thinking new clutch and slave cylinder while in there but could it be the hydraulic cylinder on the firewall? Could the hydraulic not be working and how could I check that first if so?

I bought the truck used from a neighbor (transmission was shot @ 119,000 miles) and he and I had a used transmission put in it at that time and I paid for replacing the clutch with brand new then as well. I know it was done, because I picked up the clutch myself and carried to the mechanic/friend. Seemed like a good idea at the time since the trans was out and the only extra cost would be for the part. No extra labor to install new clutch.

Might of been better leaving the old one now! Anyway, this new clutch and all only has about 60,00 miles on it.

I only know enough to get myself in trouble and would have to have "edjumacated help" with replacing the clutch if that turns out to be it. ;\)

Yeah if the pedal is sponge feeling its to do with the cylinders. Maybe at both ends. Dont change one without the other. Like putting on one wheel cylinder. Extra pressure will blow the other.

If it's only hydraulics........Since that slave cylinder is internal, should I cough up the extra $110 and replace the clutch while I've got the trans out as well?

That's the biggest issue I suppose, is the time involved in pulling the transmission to replace the slave cyclinder. The clutch master cylinder would be an easy fix (if it was only that) since it's external on the firewall.

Oh my. The slave cylinder on the Ford is internal? What a duha, stupid idea. Or a for sure repair for the dealership down the road. Maybe that was the thinking. I have not worked on a Ford since 1973. A certain 69 Mustang beat me to my paycheck every week for parts. I swore off and never looked back. Now, if I buy new due to certain events recently. I would buy a Ford. I am not into government vehicles. I guess rebuildng this old Toyota 22R engine is the right thing to do for now.

22r need rebuilt how many miles

prolly 400k

\:D Only engine with a whole life policy. Its close to that. But it keeps on ticking. Just need to refresh it. Found an old engine and took to the machine shop. Had it bored, line bored, decked 10K. Bought a new head w/ valves and cam, and new pistons an pins, sized the rods, turned the crank. New timing set/ steel guides, and oil pump, and all gaskets. For $1250. Do that with a Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. Good for another 400K. I am thinking on a Weber carb also. Wore out a carb already??? Thats bad? High 300K. Oh well them carbs aint what they use to be. \:D

Yeah I agree. If Ford made it. I would also be a Ford man. Not many days pass that I dont have people asking if I want to sell the truck. Rusty bed, the rest is mint almost. I am thinking about cutting out rust in bed. Welding in metal and using lead to fill. Like antique cars are done. Just to avoid a new truck. I dont need a big one. Just need a truck. This one is 4x4 straight axle front end. Like a Jeep on the cheap. \:D

I agree. Replace both.

if you setting at a red light with clutch engaged in gear does it slowly start to take off?

Most of the time yes. Sometimes, it seems to do better and not try to crawl away. This just started last week and I had a few local trips that I had to use the truck for. Nothing but 2nd gear driving all around town.

Using the car now until I fix it though.

i say hydraulics

i channged the clutch mc on one it fixed it then 20 g later the slave cyl went bad

That's what I'm thinking about trying. $60 attempt I can do easy. I would have to pay someone to help pull the transmission and replace the slave. If the MC gets me another 20,000 before I have to replace the slave I'd be happy.

P.S. My son has an old Yoter with the 22R and about 180,000 miles.
We have replaced a starter and fuel filter! ;\)

Double check your bleed ports and make sure they are not bleeding off, but like DA said, change the Hydraulics out and call it good. If you can afford the clutch and a turn on the pressure plate do it all. I love my Fords but this set up was really stupid!!
