If you have spent very much time the hardwoods during temps above 60 degrees, the was probably a snake very near by. I guess the good news is, you almost have to step on it or sit on it to get bitten.
I couldn't agree more. I'll never forget working in a temporarily dry swamp in Louisiana. I was standing still trying get a good GPS position when I felt something on my boot. I looked down to see a 3-foot rattlesnake sliding over the top of my left boot. I didn't move a muscle and the snake just went on about his way. I gotta' admit I was sweating bullets there for awhile though!

A timber rattler or copperhead, probably has the best natural camo that was ever created.
That is what bothers me the most. You just cannot see a copperhead.
Every time I see an exhibit at the zoo, the sign on the tiny living quarters says "Copperhead". I look for 2 minutes and finally see it... laying right there IN PLAIN VIEW!
I was double-struck by a cottonmouth in early January. I can hear a snake-bite story without thinking about yours. I always laugh at you jumping 5 feet high and running in the air for 20 seconds. Also comical that it took 2 strikes to get your attention! Sorry to laugh, but knowing your OK, makes it funny now! Oh I promise you I screamed like a girl! I think suddenly realizing you've been bitten by a poisonouis snake triggers an instinctive ultra-fear reaction.
I sure I would react the exact same way. But unlike you, I'm sure I would have had to change professions to a desk job!
Last year was my first year with snake boots. Just like most of those on this thread, the boots made me much more comfortable in the woods!

One more thing to worry about this weekend as warm as it will be. I hate snakes. Like i've always said , when i see a snake i can put out some moves that would put James Brown to shame.

They can be very dangerous if you run up on 1 2 quick!

had a few encounters over the years. very few venomous snakes although i am sure i have been near a few i didn't see. please don't kill the snakes unless it is a venomous snake somewhere that it would be a threat.

Yes, I have levitated before after stepping on a copperhead...
Amazing how high you can "levitate" too!

I was cleaning out my vegetable garden a couple of falls ago in late October, pulling up the metal T fence posts I use for tomato stakes. As I grabbed one and started wrenching it around to loosen it up, I looked down and noticed a long stick less than a foot away from my left foot. Took me a couple of seconds to realize it was a stretched out timber rattler. I slowly backed away and it never even moved. A 6' long T-post will really put a hurtin' on a snake when applied with sufficient force! He was 52" long and had 11 rattles.
Also, in my experience a straight-shaft Stihl string trimmer will clip the head right off of a copperhead!
