I wear my snakeboots all year. While working near Texarkana several years ago, I was double-struck by a cottonmouth in early January.

A timber rattler or copperhead, probably has the best natural camo that was ever created. Laying still in the woods leaves, they are virtually invisable.
If you have spent very much time the hardwoods during temps above 60 degrees, the was probably a snake very near by. I guess the good news is, you almost have to step on it or sit on it to get bitten.
A guy I know killed a timber rattler on Christmas day in the 70's in Lewis County. I was an unusually warm day for that time of year. He was sitting on the ground watching the side of a hollow and just happen to look to his side on the ground. The snake was coiled up about 2 foot away. Luckily, I guess it was cool enough for the snake to be slugish.
5 1/2 foot long.....14 rattles.

I was double-struck by a cottonmouth in early January. I can hear a snake-bite story without thinking about yours. I always laugh at you jumping 5 feet high and running in the air for 20 seconds. Also comical that it took 2 strikes to get your attention! Sorry to laugh, but knowing your OK, makes it funny now!
Oh I promise you I screamed like a girl! I think suddenly realizing you've been bitten by a poisonouis snake triggers an instinctive ultra-fear reaction.

I couldn't agree more. I'll never forget working in a temporarily dry swamp in Louisiana. I was standing still trying get a good GPS position when I felt something on my boot. I looked down to see a 3-foot rattlesnake sliding over the top of my left boot. I didn't move a muscle and the snake just went on about his way. I gotta' admit I was sweating bullets there for awhile though!

That is what bothers me the most. You just cannot see a copperhead.
Every time I see an exhibit at the zoo, the sign on the tiny living quarters says "Copperhead". I look for 2 minutes and finally see it... laying right there IN PLAIN VIEW!

I sure I would react the exact same way. But unlike you, I'm sure I would have had to change professions to a desk job!
Last year was my first year with snake boots. Just like most of those on this thread, the boots made me much more comfortable in the woods!

One more thing to worry about this weekend as warm as it will be. I hate snakes. Like i've always said , when i see a snake i can put out some moves that would put James Brown to shame.

Yes, I have levitated before after stepping on a copperhead...
Amazing how high you can "levitate" too!

I was cleaning out my vegetable garden a couple of falls ago in late October, pulling up the metal T fence posts I use for tomato stakes. As I grabbed one and started wrenching it around to loosen it up, I looked down and noticed a long stick less than a foot away from my left foot. Took me a couple of seconds to realize it was a stretched out timber rattler. I slowly backed away and it never even moved. A 6' long T-post will really put a hurtin' on a snake when applied with sufficient force! He was 52" long and had 11 rattles.
Also, in my experience a straight-shaft Stihl string trimmer will clip the head right off of a copperhead!

Heard it all of my life. Older people were happy to have black snakes around the house for that very reason.

king snakes often prey on other snakes including vemonous snakes. most king snakes i can catch are released here around the house for that reason.

I have some huge "chicken or turkey" snakes around the house and I leave them alone..I tell everyone who visits not to kill them either. (Had a few visitors do some dancing in the air when one crawls up on them) Knock on wood but we have seen very few venomous snakes and I think it's because of these non-venomous ones

bought my first pair of snake boots last year after 50 yrs and I am so glad that I got them. I feel so much better now when I go to the woods. I own a pair of Rocky Snake Boots, but I have big calves, and even though these are lace up boots, they are a pain in the posterior to get on and off, plus they are hot! So, I just wear conventional 9" boots now, and watch where I step.

Seen my first snake of the year today. A 4 foot Chicken Snake while cutting the grass on our farm in Mt. Juliet. I had to stop mowing and wait for him to crawl off. We have quite a few of them over there. They keep the mice out of my shop.
