Here's some daylight pictures of mature to near-mature bucks at salt licks during daylight. But notice how many of these pictures are velvet-antler pictures. The vast majority of the daylight "mature-bucks-at-salt-lick" pictures I get are during summer. Just a few of these pics are hard-antler pics and all of these were taken in the first two weeks of September. If I were going to try and hunt mature bucks near salt licks, it would be the opening week of bow season. After that, not only do daylight pics drop off dramatically, all salt lick deer pics drop off dramatically.

Wow! I guess enough said. You bring up another question. Why does daylight activity drop off shortly after season opens? Is this a natural occurrence or is it triggered by the increased activity of man?

Salt usage by deer is linked to temperature. Deer need salt most when temperatures are highest. Now some salt users find deer will visit their salt licks year round, but I find salt use drops to near zero once daytime temps fall into the 60s.
