I've got a couple of trail cameras set up over a mineral lick at my stand sites and now I'm thinking this might not be a good idea. I'm worried that if a mature buck gets spooky from the camera/mineral lick being at that location he will avoid that area or wait til night fall to only enter that area. Do I need to place my cameras and mineral lick stations away from hunting site so that I don't ruin that area?

Yes.Better to be on the safe side, especially when dealing with mature bucks.

if you go to Mid West Whitetail.com, you'll see were thats how they get most of there big buck trail cam pics is over mineral licks. They even mix it up themselves, I used their mix recipe and started 6 new ones yesterday, 1 part salt, 2 parts trace mineral salt(non medicated) and 1 part Di-Calcium Phosphate(mainly used in dairy cow feed mix).

ghosthunter,

When a camera location is "baited" (something attractive placed in front of the camera to draw deer in), deer don't react as negatively to camera flash as sites that are not baited.

However, even deer avoiding cameras due to camera flash don't leave the area. They simply go around the camera.

All that said, the real answer to your dilemma is to use black-flash cameras (no visible light from the flash). It looks like a new product available this year (Uway XtendIR-B flash extender) will allow the conversion of red-glow (so-called Infra-red cameras) to black-flash for the cost of just over $100. You simply hook the black-flash extender to an existing red-glow camera and then tape over the red-glow flash emitters on the camera, using only the black-flash of the flash extender for night-time flash illumination.

I've got one of these black-flash flash extenders in my possession and I'm testing it. Previous tests of this product produced very good results.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. I'm not very experienced with trail cameras, though I did own one in the past until it was stolen, and did manage to get some pictures of some nice bucks but they where mostly at night and on natural travel routes, not a mineral site. Will mature bucks utilize the mineral sites regulary during day light hours with an overlooking camera? Will this be a spot I can hunt and expect to not have the natural activity of the deer be altered? I just don't want to ruin already good spots.

I can honestly say I've never gotten a pic of a mature (4.5 plus) buck on camera during daylight hrs over a mineral sight during hunting season. Not one. I'm sure others have,I'm just speaking from personal experience.

When dealing with mature bucks it could affect things imo,I wouldn't check the cam no sooner than every 2 weeks just to be sure and would try to wait till the middle of the day when your least likely to bump one,if you're worried about the flash spooking them like BSK said get ya a black flash cam or the extender deal to put on your regular or red-glow flash cam.

Some during the summer but less during season. In addition, mineral site usage often drops off dramatically once cool weather arrives.

Also remember that mature bucks are far more naturally nocturnal than younger deer.

It is more the human activity involved in placing and checking the camera that will alter deer movement than the camera itself.
