What is the longest distance that you have ever tracked a Whitetail deer after a hit, with a bow or gun. I will bet there is a very informative answer coming up.
Whenever you feel like it and are feeling well, I know there are many besides myself, that would like to read your reply.
Thanks for all that you contribute to this section of TN DEER.

I didn't shoot the deer but a friend of mine up in Canda shot one just at dark one night. We started the trail the next morning in a light drizzle. I don't know exactly but we estimated we trailed him about four miles finally found him still barely alive and my friend was able to get another arrow in him and finish him off.
The longest I trailed one I shot was probably two miles. I shot the deer about 7:15 in the morning we found him in a deep creek about five in the afternoon.
Another guide and I once trailed an elk for two days and did finally make the recovery. We figured that to be about 12 miles. It was a clean pass through, single lung shot.

That is unreal bowriter. For some reason, I knew it would be a long way. Besides blood, what are some other sign that you look for when tracking?

Well, you look for things that are out of place. Why is that leaf turned over? Why is that kicked up? Unless you really know the track of the animal, tracks don't mean a great deal. Too many of them most times. You look for things that have been distrubed and you look at or at the bottom of leaves on branches that hang down.
What you look for depends a great deal on where you are and what you are trailing through or in. The trackers in Africa are the best of the best. I will never be close to them.
The most impoprtant aspect is in intuiting what an animal is going to do. Forget going to water or never going down hill ornever cross a fence. That is all bs. That should be uphill...a wounded deer will go uphill just as quickly as it will go downhill.

Many gutshot deer recover if sepsis doesn't set in. Most 1-lung shot animals will recover if you don't push them. The recovery rate is far higher with a bow than you would think. Due to hydro-static shock, it is not nearly as high with a gun. But we have recovered many deer with old arrow wounds including some in the spine. Some years ago, a hunter killed a pretty nice bull with 3 broadheads imbedded in bone and deep tissue.
For sure, a gutshot animal is one of the most difficlt to recover because so often, the internal organs plug the holes and there is little or no blood. Quite often they go a short distance and bed. The common thinking is, if you leave them alone, they will die there. Usually that is pure fallacy. Ever had a bad bellyache? They get up and move, trying to relieve the pain and that is that last you will ever see of them. Now sure, they may die but you won't find them.
Now what if you make them run? What if you keep those internal organs moving and the holes open? What if you create a panic and that animal kicks up leaves and crashes through brush?
I quit arguing about wounded animal recovery many years ago. Do it any way you want and I'll do the same. But ask Gil 1 if I am any good at it.

And gut shots is where we disagree. That was very nice of you to point that out, but I really don't think anyone cares...

plenty of people care, especially when they gut shoot a deer and are scared on how to proceed. Especially when chasing them down doesn't seem logical but backing out does. Mllions of bowhunters would disagree with the above advice and I Would agree with them.
Bowriter obviously has more experience recovering animals with this method and that's fine but for others it would be irresponsible.
As far as the pop shot, never mind....
