I do believe coyote density has an impact on fawn survival.
The coyote density has been at a peak the last few years in the area where I do most of my work, and fawn survival has plummeted. Now other factors are probably at work, but I do believe the boom in coyote population is playing a role.

The coyote population where I hunt at Ames is booming. At the same time I'm seeing very few fawns with does in the Fall. Personally, I believe they have a direct impact on fawn survival but there may be others contibuting factors as well.
From what I think I understand (???) all coyotes in a given area may not breed. The dominate pairs do the breeding and subdue the breeding from subordinate coyotes. If the dominate dogs are removed from the equation by any means there is a flurry of breeding and posturing until a new dominate pair emerges. Meanwhile, provided there is an adequate food source, the population explodes. Thus it's possible by random shooting or trapping that if those dominate pairs are removed you may be making the problem worse. Remove a couple of dogs and they're replaced by several litters rather than the one they would have had. If that's true then only a mass effort of removal would have any benefits and that effort would have to be ongoing or the results would be temporary at best. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe areas that I hunt are exactly the same way, that is why I have read up on everything I can about this topic. I have learned a lot and just not sure what I can do, if anything.

Ever seen a coyote cruzing back and forth in a tall fescue field in May? I wonder what they are looking for? I was once told they were after mice and rabbits, but I often wondered, after seeing a fawn fight for it's life with 2 coyotes tearing it apart. Another good reason to eradicate fescue fields!
