A few understood what I was saying. Coach, I thought you would have.

If you could never hunt again, would your wife leave you? That would be serious.

If you could never hunt again, would one of your children get a terminal illness? That would be serious.

If you could never hunt again, would you starve? That would be serious.

Would you lose your job or your home? That would be serious.

But no. None of those things would happen. You could still walk in the woods and enjoy the sounds and sights and smells. What I was pointing out is that we have a tendency to make this most enjoyable sport not as enjoyable because we take it too seriously. It is not a serious sport.

It is recreation. Now you may have to look up the definition of that word to fully understand what I just said. We no longer have to hunt to feed ourselves. So that is not why we hunt. Hunting is a management tool and a recreation. Management is serious and hunting is a part of that. But how high we hang a treestand is not serious. The soil composition of TN vs KY is not serious. What type of scent we use is not serious.

Sitting around a campfire and telling stories is serious. How fast our bow shoots is not. Seeing the smile on an old man's face or that of young kid, as they stand over a deer, is serious. What we plant in our food plot is not.

Of course we love hunting. I have made and spent a ton of money via hunting. But not once, in the scheme of all things have I ever taken it seriously. I never compared it to holding my newborns in my arms for the first time. That was serious. I never compared it to holding my wife as she sobbed after losing our second child that was serious.

Nothing will ever replace that walk in the woods with the frost turning everything into prisms. But serious????

Get serious.

bowriter,
I know you have seen and done it all and I admire you for that,
but I learn something new every year about deer hunting. It is
not from a magazine, TV show, or a outdoor goods manufacter.

I started deer hunting in 1967 at the age of 14, so I like how
"serious" the woods talk...and how the deer listen. I am still
learning things that I have never told or wrote about.

bowriter, I think I understand what you are saying. For me it is simply a passion, love, desire, whatever you want to call it but maybe not "serious" as you have mentioned. Hunting is a way of life and some of the best memories I posses are while I was hunting. However, while I realize that it’s a blessing that I am able to contribute to the management of deer, turkey, ducks and geese, I also realize there are many more important aspects in my life that are TRULY important.

Sure now compare that to the loss of a loved one or losing a job and tell me which one is serious and which one you do because you enjoy it.

Come home and tell your wife you lost your job. Then tell her you can't can't go hunting tomorrow. See which one she thinks is serious.

Does no one understand what I am trying to covey?

THAT IS IT EXACTLY! That is what I was trying to point out. I have spent most of my life in the swamps and woods and mountains. But compared to losing my second child, they didn't amount to a pinch of coon crap.

Sure be serious about hunting if you want to. Just don't take it too seriously. It is just recreation. Your choice of what call to use will not change your life one bit.

I hear ya loud and clear BW,but I think most can differentiate between the seriousness of losing your home and the seriousness of trying to kill a big buck,at least I hope so.

That is why I consider it a sport but there are people who make a living out of a sport , then it may get serious ! Each to his own . ;\)

LOL, Seriously BW? Serious could mean anything from of great consequence as you mention to just appealing to the mind. Im guessing most are using the latter form of the word.

Honestly, I'm not that interested in what my wife thinks is "serious" or not!

Which would be worse, losing my wife or losing hunting? Hmmm...
