Every 3 or 4 years I find myself slipping into a pattern. I have some success with a certain hunting spot, set up, time, weapon, whatever it might be and that is where all my focus is concentrated. Last season was one of those years.
This coming season I plan to shake it up somewhat. Ill hunt my favorite WMA no doubt but, I am also hunting a couple more maybe one Ive never stepped foot on and I may very well join a lease. Although its gonna be tough for me to do I'll lay my bow down (a couple days LOL)...mz load and rifle hunt.
Out of state hunting a possibility, I put in for a North Dakota gun hunt but didn't get drawn 2 years ago, going to do it again this year may even do an out of state bow hunt.
Hunting the safe old reliable places and methods are great when they are working for you but, when they aren't ie....ME, its time to try something new.
Anyone else find themselves doing the same and what do you do to wing yourself from only doing what your comfortable with.

In my area, I pretty much have to stay in my comfort zone, ie my property. Everything else is either private/posted or leased. But, that's not a bad thing inasmuch as I like where I'm hunting, on our old family property where my Dad and his Dad, and his Dad before him have hunted. Rich tradition adds a lot to my hunting experience I guess is what I'm trying to say. That and just making the most of what I've got, but not saying I wouldn't like to venture out sometime and try some new areas, but like I said earlier, most places I used to hunt on the mtn are now leased by hunting clubs.

i always stay in my comfort zone (my property) until i get one good buck then i hunt a couple of honey holes i found a few years back on public land until i get one and for the 3rd buck if i'm that lucky i try other public land that i've never hunted before just to try and find another honey hole, plus the late season does hunts are starting by that time so it's a good chance to put more meat in the freezer

I guess everybody has their old reliable tried and true honeyholes, me included, but im a litle different in the fact that I very much like hunting new ground. I love to have a piece of property I have never set foot on, set a week aside, buy the maps, study them, then make the trip to scout and hang stands, and then spend the next week trying to arrow a good buck! Its a great sense of accomplishment to do this on a short schedule with nothing to go on except what you have learned yourself, and be succesful. This type hunting definitely requires serious attn to detail and learning how to read and decipher sign, and more importantly terrain features!

I like having some of my old reliables to fall back on, but I enjoy the adventure of finding new spots. Here locally, Catoosa is going to be my next accomplishment. What few times I've been there has really impressed me. Look for me to spend the majority of the 9 day archery hunt there. I'll continue to go back to Ohio and hunt the same places I've hunted since I was a kid and first started hunting. I just enjoy seeing big bucks regularly to give that up.
2011 is going to bring about some big changes in my hunting. I'm currently planning a high country mule deer hunt for Colorado. I should be able to draw one of the units I'm considering with 1 point. Not only will I be in country I've only been to once, I'll be hunting in style that I'm not accustomed to. Should be a fun bow hunt.

my dad and have hunted together for over 40 years on his farm
he has a little over 900 acres and its gotten to point where when we are talking about it he can tell me he saw something by a particular bush or tree and i know exactly where he's talking about
well my dad probably doesn't have many good years left and his farm is definitely my comfort zone it would feel really strange to hunt somewhere else
we went to montana and wyoming a couple of times
but i've never gone hunting that i didn't take my dad
so its no so much the place but the company

My comfort zone is pretty big, Tellico. There is no doubt that one of the reasons I keep at it is to prove that I still can. And if I get a little bored with one area, I can always check out another, just over the next ridge. I still have a couple of big areas I haven't been in, yet. Maybe it's about time to take a look, while I've still got time. Almost turkey season.
