There was a thread a couple months ago about a huge 8 pt that if taken legally would heve been the largest 8 pt ever registered by B&C or P&Y. As it turned out, the deer was poached, and the hunter was sentenced last week. Here is a link to the story about his sentencing.

I'd have to go with the poaching.
I don't guess I have a problem with Cabelas trying to buy the rack. At least people (perhaps me) would get to see it if it was displayed at one of their stores. I'm sure their math goes something along the lines of - if we can draw 20,000 people into a store to see it and they each spend $10 while they are there, we've broken even. That's OK with me. Better than having it sit in the corner of some DNR office, just because a dirtbag happened to be the one that shot it.

We never would have seen the buck if it hadn't been poached. I'm not condoning poaching, I'm just saying it's probably a good chance it never would have been killed legally. Just saying.

I don't see an ethical problem unless someone tried to pass it off as a legitimately-killed deer. I think a retailer would probably get more mileage out of the real story. Kinda like going to see Bonny and Clyde's shot-up car. Could be a good lesson for kids (and some adults) about the hazards of poaching (and robbing banks).

There are people out there that would proudly display an animal like that that they killed illegally and even brag about it....
Known quite a few that have done just that with far lesser animals.....
